Time for an upgrade?

Marbo

Hello from New member ?

Here's the dilemma, I'm running some old hardware, but it works fine. Now and again I'm left wanting but not very often.

I'm not a heavy gamer. Pc used for general bits and bobs. Been teaching myself a bit about modeling and using daz3d for rendering.

I'm in the UK and visiting New York in a few weeks. Do I upgrade just because hardware is so much cheaper there?

Very limited budget (lots of other things taking priority). Looking at

Ryzen 5 2600

B450 aorus

32GB 3000mhz ram (overkill but its cheapish)

Current

I5 3570

B something board

16GB 1600 mhz ram

Keeping 1050ti, psu, and aio cooler.

Is it worth it or would I just be buying for the sake of it?

Thanks

if this is cheapish then you have a very different standard of memory prices to others

just stay with your current setup. On the cheap there's 8 threaded Xeons and i7s on LGA 1155 for upgrade

In case you don't have an SSD yet it might be better to upgrade to one of those before upgrading anything else.
That alone can make a massive difference.

Thanks for the reply.

The 32G gig works out to about £110 over here about £150. So much cheaper.

Looked at used i7 but thought prices seem a little high for an old cpu. Would it give much of an improvement over the i5?

Never thought about putting a Xeon in it.

Issue I have is while rendering.

I don't use high settings, just playing about with it. But if I leave a render running even simple browsing becomes slow.

Yes, I've used ssd for some while now. Unbelievable difference when I got my first.

I mean, budget to memory in ratio to CPU and motherboard.

HT gives about 30% performance increase for the same frequency

Xeon E3 and E3 v2 in your case, 1230 or larger for the model number, dont use one with extra letters except an E or V in the name.

Thanks again

I'll look into the Xeon

I know the ram would be overkill, but as its a lot cheaper than uk. Also thought it might help when trying to work with large scenes in daz.

To touch on the CPU as well, the i7-3770 is about 100 bucks on ebay, and without oc or an x-series chip this is pretty good.

UK is about the same in pounds as you pay in dollars so about $120

Anyway, no huge rush

If I decide to go with a big upgrade then definitely ryzen.

I think my issue is that I'm trying to justify it just because I'm visiting the US.

Currently house hunting so it's unlikely I'd get the chance again for a couple of years. Every penny counts ?

If I can get an i7 3770k for under £100 in the next 6 weeks then that will do.

Here is just the UK search for the i7-7700. Most of the buy now seems to be 70 pounds with 20 for shipping.

Also to touch on ryzen, Yes it is upgradeable but, if you want Ryzen you are gonna not just need a new processor, but a new motherboard as well as ram. all in all its a much more expensive upgrade. You might need new thermal paste with a new cpu by the way. Arctic Silver 5 is very good and is anywhere from 5 to 8 USD. Just a heads up.

Looking at a few options. The ryzen 2600 +motherboard +16gb ram works out around £200 from micro center in New York.

Get £80-100 back by selling my older stuff and it works out at not much more than an old 3770.

As far as I can see the ryzen 2600 out performs the i7.

Great. The closest Microcenter to me is and hour and a half, but they always have some fricken incredible deals. If you go with that, it will definitely outperform, the 2 extra cores will be much more helpful in rendering as well.

Little bit OTT on my original plans. But one tip, get that old kit listed.

I have funded this with old bits I sold on ebay. Seems if you have anything that was half decent in the day, and no longer available, people go nuts over it.

I'm about £50 short of covering the whole lot but still have a bit of an i5 bundle to list.
