So I wanted to upgrade an older system which has 2X2 GB ram(4 gb, the sticks are from different manufacturers). Here is my question. Since my motherboard only has 2 slots would it be better to replace one stick with an 8 GB one ( so 10 GB in total) or buy an 2x4 GB kit . Will the dual channel from the kit be more worth it than the extra 2 GB ? The CPU is an i3 3240 with an H61M motherboard. Thanks for responding !

I agree with the last guy, gram yourself a second hand 2x8gb kit.

Thought of that but didn't want to end up with so much ddr3 in case I want to upgrade

Then dont spend any money on the system and just upgrade.  "In case I..." is not the best practice when it comes to upgrading older systems.  Using that logic it is better to not spend any money on the old hardware and just jump to new gear.

2x8gb is ~$50 and a 4c/8t xeon (e3-1230/e3-1230v2) for that socket can be had for $50.  That would just about double your CPU performance and quadruple your memory capacity.
