Seriously the best thing you could do is to pick the best set of headphones within your budget and then buy a http://www.modmic.com/ for it.  A setup like that will blow any headset out of the water.

Some other worthy mentions would be Sennheiser PC 330 or 350, Beryerdynamic MMX300 (I have theses they are pretty damn good, pricey tho).

Headphones and a mic.

you clearly have the budget to pull it off.

Gaming headsets are very likely to have too much bass and aren't very good sounding relatively.

^ Good point. If you are able to spend $320 on the steel series you could spend maybe a little more and get great studio quality headphones and a mic that will probably sound better than most gaming headsets on the market.

I would go with the Shure 440 or Sennheiser HD 558 and go with the Blue snowball or Yeti. I got a Razer Kraken and it works fine, but I should have gone with a mic+ good pair of headphones. If you want 7.1 surround, razer has software to make it happen. Best part: its free.

if i am going to get a mic sepparate it will probably the Blue Microphones - Yeti from newegg at a $120 instead of 150 from an instant discount

Something like that is overkill unless you plan on doing voice recording for youtube or something.  The mod mic is pretty amazing quality, don't let the price fool you.
