FX 9590 and Ryzen 2700

fewlsguild

I'm going to do my best. I have a computer I am trying to fix so my son can start playing Minecraft on a PC instead of the pocket edition.

I have an FX 9590, with a LEPA AquaChanger 120mm with 2 x 4 GB 1866 RAM on a Gigabyte 970. 4GB Windforce 460 GPU. SSD. No optical drives. Not going to upgrade further. Not going to overclock. It needs a power supply. 2 120 mm Fans.

My rig is a Ryzen 2700 with a wraith max cooler. Asus A320M board. 2 sticks of 2666 8GB RAM. 8GB Red Devil Golden Sample GPU. 4 120mm Fans. I have an EVGA 850 BQ. I don't overclock and I won't be upgrading.

I need to know the smallest (cheapest) PSU I can use as a temporary fix. I'm going to build either a Threadripper or 3900X next so I don't want to put too much into it.

CX450 NON M

CX450 won't work with their GTX970 graphics card which requires an 8pin and 6pin PCIe connector. CX450 only has a single 6+2 pin PCIe connector.

If it were me I would stick the EVGA BQ 850w in your sons system and buy a better PSU for your system that you could carry over for your threadripper/3900X build.

Also, why threadripper? Do you need the PCIe lanes? Or do you need something with a lot of CPU Cores?

Ah, I see. Haha! I misread it as a "Gigabyte [GTX] 970 4GB Windforce GPU" (which is actually a real card: https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Graphics-Card/GV-N970WF3OC-4GD-rev-10-11#ov)

The AMD RX460 is a lower power consuming card than the GTX970. It also does not require additional power through PCIe cables, so the issue with the Corsair CX450 having only a single PCIe connector won't be a concern with that graphics card.

450w would be fine considering your low power RX460 graphics card, but for an FX9590 I would generally recommend 550w. Those CPUs have quite high power consumption. I would still probably stick to my recommendation of using your existing EVGA BQ in the FX9590 rig and buying a new PSU for your PC.

What's your budget for the PSU (assuming you were buying the PSU with the intention of using it in your upcoming Ryzen/Threadripper build and not in your sons FX9590 rig)?

So I got the 850 BQ in 2017 for $65 on a sale. I wouldn't say I have a budget for my son's computer, but I definitely want to spend as little as possible, he is 7. According to PC Part the 9590 build is at 414 watt and the Ryzen 2700 build runs at 356 watts. If I could buy two of the same PSU between 450 and 550 watts and then use the 850 for my next build that would probably be my main choice. I'm just unsure how close to push it to pcpartpickers watt numbers.

If you click the wattage estimate from PCPP, you'll see a breakdown of how much each part consumes (according to them). It's just ridiculous and unrealistic. Also do note that if someone hasn't manually added the power numbers for a part, it will calculate as 0W. So it's very inconsistent as well.

For a more realistic and accurate estimate under a gaming load, just do GPU TDP + 70W. That has been fairly accurate when comparing to numbers from actual reviews.
