Hey Everyone,

In a recent post I was told the VRM's on my Asrock B450M-HDV R1.20 aren't good at all.

I am currently looking at new hardware to upgrade with.

Hardware in pc, currently;

  • CPU: Ryzen 3 2200G
  • M/B: Asrock B450M-HDV R1.20
  • GPU: Palit (I think) GTX 1050-ti
  • RAM: 16GB Crucial
  • PSU: 550W
  • HDD1: Seagate Barracuda Green (I think its green) 1TB
  • HDD2: Seagate Black 1TB

Hardware I am looking to upgrade/to;

I am looking for a motherboard that can support the above hardware as well a m.2 (if possible) but definately an ATX so I can use 4 DDR4 RAM slots

Can anyone suggest good but not too expensive motherboard(s).

Thank You

~Andrew

PSU: 550W (I am unsure if I require I better powersupply to power the components I wish to upgrade too...If you can help me out, its much appreciated!)

Quality matters a lot. What specific PSU is it?

Your current motherboard can handle a 6 core no problem, assuming you don't have any plans to overclock it too much.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

ermmm, well I currently have my 2200g overclocked to 3.9ghz over 1.4 volts from the base clock of 3.5ghz

How far would I be able to push the 2600, would you say?

Some people at r/amd made this great chart: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d9_E3h8bLp-TXr-0zTJFqqVxdCR9daIVNyMatydkpFA/edit#gid=639584818

Looking at your board, it would be borderline for 6 core overclock, unless you happen to have the variant 1 or variant 2 (???) version of that board.

but the thing is, thats almost £200 where as the 2600x is £160

Thing is the 2600X gives you minimal gains over the 2600 which you can overclock to meet the performance of the 2600X (which has very minimal overclock headroom) so the 2600X shouldn't be considered imo. So I agree with what @Oalei said, it's either the 2600 or the 3600 - 3600 offers you great improvement over the 2600 with its new 7nm lithography and architectural updates.

Okay, I understand where you are coming from, but wouldn't I have to get a new motherboard as well. To support to ryzen 3000?

to the one you have recommended is there a huge difference?

Also, are there any cheaper boards, (Damn, I feel so cheap reading this...) are there any cheaper boards you could recommend. I don't care about how they look only performance. I can add some sprinkles and glitter, true LTT style. Maybe even wrap some christmas lights around my pc case (literally) (meme'd from Scrapyard wars)

P.S. I'm not going to add, sprikles, glitter or christmas lights, lmao. But tbh I don't care about the GAMING colours on the board or anything just that it performs well and is worth the money.

Many Thanks

That's a terrible looking power supply, any PSU that cheap can not be trusted in a system you care about. You ought to replace that asap.

Your motherboard will support 3000 series Ryzen, you just need to update the BIOS. I actually recommend 3rd gen Ryzen because it's more power efficient.

huh? I was told by @WebPlayz that:

What motherboard do I look at?

He is wrong. Even though it would handle a 6 core R5 2600/X it isn't worth the asking price of £125.

I would go with an MSI B450 Tomahawk if it was me for £89. There are cheaper options though if you wanted something else.

A motherboard that have a Bios Flashback.

its either you go B450 Tomahawk/Gaming pro carbon, X470 Gaming pro carbon. Maybe if you want something next level how about a Taichi or something. idk if taichi have bios flashback but MSI have them iirc.

All the MSI boards below have bios flashback, so you could go with a 3xxx cpu without any issues as it is easy to update without a cpu.

Some ATX and mATX options:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/FZvbt6/msi-b450m-mortar-atx-am4-motherboard-b450m-mortar

These ASRock boards don't have bios flashback. They would work out of the box with a 1xxx/2xxx cpu. One of the listed retailers (CCL Online) offers a free bios update though if you bought one with a 3xxx cpu.

ASRock ATX/mATX:

Ryzen 3000 works on all X370, B350, X470 and B450 boards alongside the X570. However, unlike the X570 all those boards require bios updates. Some offer bios flashback with no CPU but in case you pick one which doesn't then I'm pretty sure AMD is offering an upgrade kit (an Athlon 200G) but I'm unsure on that last one, someone will have to correct me.

Okay, I can take a look at these however I don't need a motherboard that allows me to flash the bios without a cpu as AMD, as @AvogadrosDog stated, does offer a boot kit which, of course I will have to send back once I am done with.

Have you managed to find confirmation of this? If so then it does open up more options with respect to the motherboards. I would, however, recommend not going for X370 or B350 boards as you will probably get much less bios support compared to X470/B450 boards.

You only need bios flashback (Or a boot kit) if you go with a B450 board and a 3000 series cpu like the R5 3600/X. If you are getting the R5 2600/X then it will work out of the box with any B450 board.

Also as I mentioned if you did want a 3000 series cpu with a B450 board that doesn't have bios flashback then you could buy from CCL Online as they offer a free update if you buy the cpu/board from them.

I have been looking around for deals, I normally purchase my hardware from a site named Ebuyer UK. I have found this 'deal';

https://www.ebuyer.com/882580-msi-b450-gaming-plus-motherboard-with-ryzen-5-2600-processor-bundle-b450-gaming-plus-2600

I don't really know if this is worth it.

Also I really can't go for a 3000 series processor, atleast not the 3600, right now anyways. It will mean I have to limit expenses on other hardware, unless advised otherwise.

That is a pretty decent board. Will be more than fine for a 6 core.
