1080 Overclocking Help

Boosted base clock by 100 MHz to test incrementally like I've done with CPU before, and I'm already getting game crashes. Base normal is 1683 and boost is like 1900 something, so how can overclocking the base to 1782 cause problems? I don't need to boost voltage for that, so what gives? Temps are also fine, sitting around 71 previously. Any feedback is appreciated.

Because you're not reading the right number. GPU boost 3 pushes the GPU past the base and boost at stock and when overclocked.

So is the boost screwing me over? Surely not, right? And I think I'm reading the proper numbers for the stock base and boost numbers. At any rate, why does increasing the clock by such a marginal amount have such a negative effect despite temps? I've seen 1800 Mhz or so at core voltage do fine in other rigs.

show me a screen capture and highlight the numbers you're reading please.

HWinfo64 shows base clock, Afterburner shows boosted base clock in slider, but when idle shows regression to normal base clock (which I thought was normal given no usage). Tried to screenshot during a superposition benchmark, but it wouldn't let me, but I was getting about 2000 MHz in that, and it ran fine. I crash in Siege and another game almost immediately after playing, though.

 

Also did an OC scan an found the average to be 56 MHz, so that might have been too high at 100? idk

100 is quite a lot. Didn't add power or voltage and expect a lot out of it. As well as the card maker being what they are.

I'm talking about frequency sustained in 3D loads, say games. At idle the GPU defaults to base clock with power plan in Nvidia control panel that's not "power save" (otherwise it will dip even more, minimum 139MHz for Pascal). The screenshot below Afterburner looks like AIDA64.

Then you are reading it properly.

 

Basically, forget the base and boost stuff. Actual frequency matter, they don't.

 

2-2.2GHz is where Pascal GPUs reside when overclocked, so you're results seem normal.

Now you jumped to talking offsets, which is something incomparable to those using the same GPU but different model of that GPU. Say, sb with an EVGA GTX 1080 FTW will need a different offset value to hit the same actual frequency.

Yeah, toned it down to 48 MHz over base, works great now. I just wanted a bit over base without changing voltage for now.

That's HWinfo64. I understand what you're saying about a set clock and actual clocks.

With regards to offset values, is that what this delta of 56 MHz is, just adjusting the GPU boost frame up that much, basically? Why does that vary by card model and not GPU? That's interesting.

I’d just add power and voltage if you want to go higher. Assuming the board has the power delivery nesesary or is just a good gpu.

Yes, basically "offset_value" higher than what it would go without the offset. Could still be a tad lower due to GPU boost backing off as temperatures increase, but that's usually a small difference.

 

It varies by card model because different cards can start with different full load cards. Heard of factory overclock? That's what makes things different between cards. You can treat that as offset added by the manufacturer out of the box that software can't read.

No idea what either of them are. So either a poor silicone or too hot. Or both giving the low clocks.
