Upgrade or wait?

EmoChipmonk

Im thinking of upgrading to a 1660ti to hold me off till the amphere (or whatever its called) card line comes out next year. ATM i have a 970 FTW edition.

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-970-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1660-Ti/2577vs4037

This makes me interested but its also a bit hard to swallow the idea of spending 400$ on a videocard i will replace next year.

The benefit is Better preformance in games and smoother vr experiences.

I will prob re sell the card but god knows how well that will go.

If you are going to spend $400 and already have a 970, I'd hold out until a capable ray racing card falls into your budget. You could just get a used 580 or 1060 and sell the 970 until that time which should cost under a $100 net.

It is just my subjective opinion to your subjective question. By all means, get works best for you including considering the new Navi cards if you are looking to spend $400.

imo, you should tune down a bit graphic settings just to wait next gen cheaper stuff.

going from $369 gtx970, the next worth upgrade would be rtx2060 or above, but its generally too pricey...

Im picking the 1660ti because its about as cheap as i can get and has a half way decent preformance increase

As for vr games i struggle  with most beyond low settings. While what i experience is better then the Oculus quest its still not the most fantastic. Thank Gaben for skyrims modding comunity because that game struggles to run in vr without unofficial patches.

When the new line comes out im gunning for the 2180ti (or whatever its called) (and yes i am building a new ring befor it comes out.

The new Ryzen 5700xt should be better than the 1660 TI and about $400. Check it out first.

$420 CAD is $321.40 USD. They are at least $50 less and often better than that in the USA. Consider buying from a US website that will ship to you.

420 is the end price after taxes and such.

I don't know about shipping costs but great chance you can get it tax free from the USA. This country used to charge sales tax only to in state residents to the business and many sites are still set up that way including most eBay retailers but also real major chain stores often do.

Is there a specific make and model 1660 ti you are looking to buy?

Not really. Just a 1660ti that's cheap I'm not picky about somthing I plan on replacing.

BHphoto Video sells one for $270 ($353 CAD) and free shipping to Canada but they do charge provincial tax. You can also check out Newegg on their US site or even better (their eBay US site). Plenty of major US retailers on eBay that might ship to Canada for a bit extra but avoid taxes.

That's an okay performance upgrade, but I would wait for the RX 5600. The 1660 Ti is overpriced. It's a sub $300 card that gets beat in perf/$ by the RX 5700 cards which shouldn't be happening. Even if you don't want the AMD cards, the RX 5600 will force a price cut.
