Hello there,

the title says a lot about what my issue is. It actually occured for the first time like 2 months ago, but by the power of Google i was able to quickly find a solution, thanks to a topic on this very forum made by @Valkyrie Lenneth (whom i thank a lot). And my PC was fine again.

But now, for unexplainable reasons, it's back. HPET is still disabled (on both Windows and BIOS), and i wasn't able to find any other solution to this.

Not only the PC stutters during download, but during this stuttering, the download speed is like a third of what it should be (less actually).

This occurs while downloading games from Steam, Uplay, Battle.net and so on, as well as downloading anything on a web browser. (Might be worth mentioning that it does not happen while, i don't know, extracting an archive)

I ran both Samsung Magician and CrystalDisk in case it was a drive issue, but they both say my 970EVO is fine. This also happen if i download onto any other drive (the other SSD or the HDD).

Is there anybody else with this problem who figured it out? I'm at your disposal for any additional informations you might need.

Thanks a bunch

Oddvar

It is a OS issue.  Has nothing to do with your drives.  When was it last working ?  Also can you tell us more about your PC.  Fill in your sig or tell us your rig, what parts you have and what not so we can help you better.

Thanks, it slipped my mind :P sig updated. The last time it was working properly was probably 1-2 weeks ago, something like that.

Ok then don't get scared when I suggest this but what you should do is a system restore and go to point from the time it was working 2 weeks ago like you said.  You will not lose any data, only possibly programs installed in this period wont be there, but your problem would most probably get fixed.

But why did it get fixed the first without doing this? I only disabled the HPET. Doesn't this point in a different direction?

I mean, something has changed since when it worked fine and now.  So you can trace back your steps ya know.  If you cant then system restore is something to try but no guarantees but doesn't hurt to try.

Ok this is gonna sound really weird (at least it was for me). I wanted to try something first, before restoring to a previous point like you said. I went ahead and re-enabled HPET in both Windows and BIOS. And... it's gone.

How can it be gone if HPET was the problem in the first place?! (And now i'm experiencing a bit of extra latency, as expected, especially when ALT-Tabbing fast)

EDIT: Ok i'm going crazy. After re-enabling HPET like i said above, my PC was laggy and annoying, so i went back and re-disabled HPET again (on both Windows and BIOS of course). The problem is still gone, and i'm downloading at full speed without any problem, and my PC is now fast.

What is going on?! O_o

its possible ur hdd/ssd is set in a power saving state `thus cuasing downloads to chop ( the network card can also have a power state mode )

hpet can solve alot of problems, but if the ssd/hdd or network card goes in power stat, hpet will do some but not fully fix it

when u enable/disable hpet do u also change the command in windows?  if u enable it, it should be enabled in windows aswell,  if u disable it , disable in windows aswell

if in ur case u did that already, try having it disable and enabled in windows ( software timing ) if that solves it there is a software problem in most case

Hey there man! Thanks for your reply.

I always enable/disable HPET in both Windows and BIOS (as per your guide). Point is, with both disabled, i was having problems, after turning them back on, the stuttering was gone but the PC was laggy. And after turning them off again, the stuttering was still gone and my PC wasn't laggy anymore. So how did i fix by essentially doing nothing? =|

disable in bios enable in windows, reboot and try if problem stay,  else its smt like a power saving feature or ssd/hhd problem ( i had same on a dieing ssd before )

only for troubleshoot btw ( its full software timing )

No no the problem is gone now. Point is that i solved it just by turning them on and back off again, nothing more.

I didn't think about that! So the update may have switched Windows' HPET back on while leaving BIOS' HPET off?

i think windows updating changing back the setting is only explanation why it works again after u set it back :)

So should it happen again, i should first check via bcdedit /enum right? If Windows switched it back on after an update i should see it there.
