Upgrading storage in desktop

GigabitXe

My computer has been having issues lately, (tons of BSODs, most relating to the kernel) so I am and going to do a fresh install of windows to try and solve the problem. This was the solution that I have arrived at after doing some research on the problems I was having. I figured that while I was doing a fresh install, I might as well do some storage upgrades. Right now I am using a 120GB Adata SSD for windows and a couple of games and a 640GB Hitachi HDD for data storage and the rest of my games. I am currently using about 550GB across both drives The SSD was bought new 3+ years ago and has been used ever since. The HDD was harvested from a Windows Vista era system and is many years old. Both drives are still functioning, but I want to replace them for peace of mind and capacity reasons. That being said I have come to two options.

#1 Replace both drives with new and different SSD and HDD. I was thinking a 240GB Kingston A400 for $29.99 and a 1TB 7200rpm WD Blue for $44.

#2 Spend a little more and just get a 1TB SSD (I was thinking a Samsung 860 QVO) for around $100, and continue to use my current HDD for overflow storage.

What are your thoughts?

P.S I know this is probably a super common question, but I don't have the time to search the forum for previous threads.

Spend a little more and get a Crucial MX500 for booting.  And a Crucial MCX500 for storage :)

Your call on the Samsung but I'd skip it...

That's a good idea, but for me that is a lot to spend for only 1TB of storage. Would getting one Crucial MX500 for booting and some games and then getting a WD Blue 1TB for everything else be a good config as well?

Yeah. That's a good way to go about it too, I prefer to separate my boot and storage physically.

Tho there really is nothing wrong with making 2 partitions on a 1TB SSD and putting everything on one drive.

Really, it's your call.  Both are 100% viable.

Thanks for letting me know. I will think about it and maybe save a little to do the two MX500s.
