Home Server CPU

Hi, I'm currently trying to build a home server. The main purpose of it is file storage, but I'm unsure as to what CPU to buy. There's not really a budget for it, I'm just looking for something within reason for non-intensive usage.

Ryzen 1600 is nice and cheap these days, perfect for small home servers/Plex, etc.

 

Could even go with a 1200 or 2200G, for the integrated graphics if you don't have a GPU lying around for output.

If it's strictly for local file storage with only one user just get a refurbished pre-built that supports SATA3 and has gigabit networking, add your drives, and call it a day.

well only the 2200g got integrated grapichs. but they are realy good for the money. i got a 2200g and im not dissapointed, tho i am planning on buyin a 1600

No. A ryzen 1600 is overkill for a file server. Unless you have 50 people using it at the same time, it would be too much.

The cheapest cpu would handle it like a champ.

Get a Athlon 200ge or Pentium / Celeron G..something.

The reason is that it is super low power, 35 watt on full load, very low power when idle.

I'll just throw this out here, you could buy a $35 raspberry pi 4b and attach it to an external hard drive. The throughput is much improved from the previous gen and includes a gigabit ethernet adapter, wifi and usb 3.0. As long as you're not having to transcode movies or handle 40 users at a time, it should work as a simple file server. It also is much smaller and uses a fraction of the electricity of a full-blown PC.

I was thinking along the lines of it being a decent setup for expanding or becoming an HTPC or something too. 

 

But very true, a file server can be run on the cheapest thing you can find.
