Hi all,

I made a post a couple of days ago asking about a possible future build, however am now considering the possible alternative of upgrading my current rig.

I initially bought it a few years from a guy in a shady PC store who said he would build me one around my (600 Pounds) budget.

The specs are as follows:

image.png.de85906774eeab2537fa869d22585131.png

PSU: 550 w

Case: Shitty metal box.

No SSD, only HDD.

I never did any real research and assumed what I got was fine. It was fast at the time compared to my old laptop but since then it has begun to slow down a ton. Booting itself takes 5 mins, and general navigation is just sluggish. I can't run any of the games I would like to (Farcry, DS3, Tomb Raider, BF5 etc.) other than league and overwatch on all low, and have been considering starting from scratch again.

Any recommendations on whether to build from scratch or upgrade what I have would be great. I have a budget of around $1800 AUD. I would also like a new case if upgrading is the way to go, as atm I have some crappy dell metal box.

Just get a 2.5" SSD in there first. Can reuse it in the new machine.

Also good to wait for 3rd gen Ryzen.

Oh and also 1080 p monitor atm but would love to upgrade to 144 Hz in the near future.

Get an SSD, after that get something liek a rx570 for a better gpu. and after that IF possible upgrade to am4 platform with an ryzen 5 1400 or 1600 etc. The 1600 can be found on some places with sale on them for around 140-170$ and if you wait until the new ryzen comes out the prices may even go down further. you current cpu is still very capable of gaming at 1080p but it may drag down performance a bit in the near future.

i5 & 8gb ram is still good for SECONDARY PC, better keep it.

is 8gb ram a 1 stick or more?, anyway not worth adding more to old sys, same goes for cpu, used i7 / xeon  are priced insanely high, (you have option to gamble for modded laptop cpu eg 47xxhq )

you shall buy :

new ssd now

new GPU mid July

play a while see how badly system is holding back, when unbearable, buy new cpu (ryzen) & mobo etc

I agree with the advice given above, however if you have a 1800$ budget, i would just keep this pc as a secondary, complimented with an SSD to increase performance a bit and invest the rest in a new (ryzen) build.

pc partpicker actually has a fairly good standard setup that i came across simply opening the page.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/guide/X77Ycf/great-amd-gamingstreaming-build

i would maybe only change the cpu cooler for a darkrock, but thats personal preference.

This will also leave some budget for that new screen you're wanting to buy.

Thanks for the responses,

What use would a secondary PC have? Just thinking that I could maybe sell my current one in order to upgrade some parts in a new build.

Cheers.

A secondary pc can have multiple uses, i currently have 3 in total. I use 1 as a backup incase this one dies for some odd reason or when a friend comes over and we want to play a multiplayer game. Removes the need for him / her to bring their own.

The third i use to host dedicated game servers for me and my friends.

Next to selling and increasing your budget, other alternative purposes can include a NAS server for storage. media center / streaming pc. Trial and error box, if you want to try another OS or get some experience with it. Use for a security / surveillance system. turn it into a emulator box. and probably more alternative uses.
