So I have an existing PC build but it isn't  living up to the standards I hoped for. I am looking at playing games at 1080p and at 120-144hz as that is my monitor. I am also looking at trying playing these games at medium to high, the games I am looking at playing are Warframe, For Honor, Rainbow Six Siege and the odd single player game here and there. The build I have currently is struggling. I have a GTX 1070 and i5 6500 and it is struggling to run those game at 144hz stable at 1080 med to high. I hear thats cause my i5 is a big bottleneck. So I am either looking to make a new build or see if I can change parts in my existing one to get that crip 144hz 1080p gameplay.

Can anyone offer some advice or build ideas which will do the trip?

Keep the GTX 1070, it's more than capable for running these games at 144Hz, but it's strange that you can't achieve 144hz in Warframe, my old crappy AMD APU can do 60+ easily, what's your RAM configuration? is it Dual Channel?

Quote or Tag people so they know that you've replied.

For Warframe i can get 144hz easy unless im in plains :/ Plains of E destroys fps lol. I mean for the other games its struggling. For Honor I have to put everything on low to hit 100fps

Plains is not only hard on the CPU but the GPU, that's for sure. It's actually a vram limit, go figure. For Honor also uses the entire CPU for sure, my brother's i5 7400 struggles quite a lot.

New ryzen coming 7/7, it'll be a great opportunity to get the 144Hz rig you need.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

So do you reckon if I got one of the new Ryzen 3000's and got a new mob to go with it it will run well with the 1070? As  I said im hoping to run games at 1080p 144fps with med to high settings

Yeah, the Ryzen 5 3600 will be only $200 and its existence will force Intel to drop their pricing as well so you'll have your pick. I also recommend a nice B450 motherboard like the ASRock B450 pro4 but there may be better availability on other options when the new products drop. You can still use your same ram, but what kit do you currently have?

The RAM I have is Corsair Vengeance 2x8gb 2666mhz I think

That should be good. It's a good opportunity to dip your toe into ram overclocking as well, since you're going for 144Hz you'll take all the ram speed you can get.

Okay so I should get a Ryzen 5 3600 when its out? What motherboard should I pair with it? With the GTX 1070 and my RAM it should run smooth at 144fps at 1080p? Also im worried about temps as my case works on no intake currently?

intake fans are recommended. You always want to properly cool your parts.

Like I said earlier, the Asrock B450 Pro4 is good.

yes, B450 motherboards will be compatible with Ryzen 3000. Most will need an update, but AMD will send a boot kit if you provide your proof of purchase.

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-100

Quote

Short Term Processor Loan Boot Kit

AMD will offer affected and qualified users (as described below) a AMD AM4 A-series processor including thermal solution for short term use ("boot kit") to perform the BIOS update on their motherboard.

This short-term processor loan or boot kit is offered through AMD warranty services and is available only for qualified users that have made a valid purchase of a 2nd Gen Ryzen™ Desktop Processor and are affected by this specific boot up issue.

This service is free of charge with the following condition:

Once you have submitted your claim for a processor loan boot kit, AMD will require pictures of your 2nd Gen Ryzen™ Desktop Processor and AMD Socket AM4 300-series motherboard, that clearly shows the model numbers and unique serial numbers as well as a copy of the purchase invoice(s) to authorize the request.  Additionally, a summary or copy of communication with the motherboard manufacturer is requested to indicate why support from the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) is not suitable.

Once the RMA request is approved, the AMD AM4 A-series processor will be sent with pre-paid return shipping. The processor is provided as a temporary loan to you for the sole purpose of updating the BIOS and must be returned within 10 business days of receipt. It is not necessary to return the provided thermal solution.

Ah okay, at this point I dunno what I can carry over from my pc now to this new one as I need a new case, cpu and mob now haha. I can take my 1070 over but I have a 550w psu and 120ss and 1tb hhd. Can I use all of them?

What case do you have that can't have more fans put inside it? Also, what specific PSU are you using?

Everything should carry over just fine

Its a really awkward case that doesn't have any ability for intake on the front and its a micro atx case I think aswell. The psu is a corsair vs 550w

The PSU is real low end, is it an orange label or grey label?

There are some affordable cases you could get, DIYPC makes decent cases at low price points like this one:

So that's the non 80+ model, you should replace that with something like a Corsair CXM when you get the chance.

I feel like a this point an entire new build is my best idea. I have a 1060 3gb i could put into the build now to sell and then make new build with my 1070 from scratch?

Actually, that doesn't sound like a terrible idea. Your rig might fetch $450 or maybe $500 in that state.
