Apologies if this is in the wrong place or has already been answered, but I'm struggling to find the answer to this no matter where I go! It seems that not many people have tried it or fed back info that it would work...

What I am looking to do, is get a sonos kit and a NAS. Host my music etc on the NAS and set it up with Plex so that I can set up playlists etc for use through the Sonos speakers.

If I was to get the Alexa Plex skill, would I then be able to say something like "Alexa, ask Plex play the party playlist in the living room", then stream the playlist from the NAS, through the Sonos to the chosen speaker?

This would be the perfect setup for me as I love to have my own music, without a stream and be able to play it on command anywhere in the house that I have some kind of sonos/alexa speaker. You just ask for the song/playlist in your own library and it plays where you ask it to.

Cheers, i appreciate the reply!

Does this mean that i can get away with out plex?

I'd just direct sonos to a NAS music location?

Looks like it:

  • 2 weeks later...

As an update...

It kind of works...

You can move your music to the NAS and set that as a share for Sonos to link up to.

Then you can add music to playlists in Sonos. Generally, my existing playlists from iTunes don't work. I assume because all the references are to the local/PC storage.

I haven't yet been able to get Alexa to play anything from the sonos library on request. It just doesn't seem to work.

yea trying to integrate plex into this setup, especially for music, is just making harder on yourself.  personally i think plex doesnt handle music all that well, besides requiring plex pass to do it.(i have plex pass, and tried out their music feature, decided it wasnt worth it. they may have made it better since though, its been a while).

it would be much easier to just use sonos and a nas. to my knowledge though alexa wont play your sonos playlist, but i could be wrong

Yes that doesn't appear to be the case... which is annoying!

Why Sonos integrate smart home voice features into their devices when you can't even ask for your own music through them is a bit annoying!

I guess its great if you pay for a music streaming service..... which i don't want to do! I prefer to buy and store my own music.
