Mixed RAM problems

Go to solution Solved by akio123008,

I've managed to fix it now; after a BIOS update the Adata module would suddenly behave just like the Crucial one in single module mode, suddenly I could run it at forced 2400 MHz, and it would even run at 2666. After I'd set the speed to 2666 with just the Adata module installed, I popped the Crucial one in too, and it worked.

All 16 Gigs are available now, and incidentally also at 2666 MHz ?

I've bought a new stick of DDR4 2400 from ADATA and attempted to add it to my motherboard, which already had a Crucial 2400 module in it. For some reason, the configuration doesn't work; although the modules are detected, I'm only getting 8 GB (the capacity of one of the modules) in total. When viewed in Task Manager, it actually says that there's 16 GB, but with 8.1 GB being hardware reserved. I've already tried swapping the modules between the two slots, and altering some bios settings, but nothing seems to work. I've also tested the modules individually, but then they both seem to work just fine. Although the ADATA stick appears to be running at 1200 MHz according to Task Manager.

The modules are almost exactly the same; both are 8 GB DDR4 2400 UDIMMs with CAS 17. What's going on here?

Edit: What's also interesting is that the Crucial stick seems more forgiving when messing with settings; when the Crucial module is in I can easily change the frequency to 2666 MHz, whereas the system crashes when I try to do so when the ADATA module is in. In fact, with that module installed, it crashes for any other setting than "auto".

Could you post a screen shot of task manager? I think you may be getting confused. For comparison, for my laptop in task manager "Hardware reserved" ram is only 118 MB, which obviously is not the correct amount for the total ram.

Yes it did that on my computer too. I think task manager just calls unused RAM "hardware reserved". Here's what it looks like right now:

I mean, what?

It is correct though; 8.1 GB of the total memory is not usable.

I see what you mean now. After doing some research it seems that all others that encountered this problem were not able to fix it. Are you able to return the ram? You'd be best off getting the same ram that is currently in there.

I know but that ram would take weeks to arrive due to supply issues. Of course I could retun the Adata stick, but that wouldn't solve the problem, that is, if it also does this with other brands.
