Upgrade the CPU or not?

Hello,

 

I need some help. I have not upgraded my cpu or motherboard since I built my computer, which was in... 2012 i think. So I would need to change my motherboard and ram as well. But I was looking at some upgrade packages, I don't want to put that much money into it. Because i feel like I kinda can run all the games with good settings, but then again I would love to have stable fps.

So my specs are:

                           CPU - Intel i5-3470 3.20GHz

                           GPU - ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB ROG Strix OC

                           Motherboard - MSI B75MA-P45

                            RAM - Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 2400MHz 16GB

 

Was looking at upgrade packages with: Ryzen 5 2600 and i5-9400F, for they were quite cheap, but no idea which ones are good or not.

Your i5-3470 should be starting to bottleneck your GTX 1070.. 

If you want the best bang for your buck, pick up a ryzen 2600 system, you can wait for 3000 series to come out, the prices for 2000 series should drop

This is good advice ^^. I'd personally wait to see how the new Ryzen series of processors perform and base my decision on that. But yes, that particular i5 ( And all 4c/4t cpus in general tbh ) are starting to get to the point where if you want to keep up with the latest and greatest games they're going to need to be upgraded. If you're looking for something around the 200 usd mark I'd suggest going with the upcoming Ryzen 5 3600, as leaked benchmarks put it pretty much on par with an 8700K, which should be a massive upgrade from your current i5, and should alleviate any bottleneck you're currently experiencing with your 1070 ( Which is probably a good bit of bottleneck depending on the game). zen 2 for 7/7 & I bet something interesting may come at 2021 ,

Get a used i7 for your current Mobo like a 3770 or i7 2600. Should help a lot with higher core count games.
