So about 4 years ago I bought the iPhone 6s 128gb. I still use it every day and I like it really much.
However, now it has reached the moment where it would need some repairs. But if I would repair all things that would require some fixing, I might as well look for an entirely new phone.

This is where I'm a bit indecisive...
Before I got the iPhone, I had owned a Samsung Galaxy S4, an HTC One, and an HTC Wildfire. Although they were good phones at the start, after about a year or so they would feel like they needed to be replaced. They all had several issues and altogether after I had gotten the iPhone, I really did notice a that I had gotten a bad taste from android. Even now whilst my iPhone needs to be fixed it feels better than any of the android devices I had before...

Because I had this great experience with my current iPhone 6s, I would like to just pick up the newest Phone XS (or XR) (although I don't like the idea of that big of a notch) and hope to get a similar result where I can enjoy the phone for at least another 2-4 years. But looking at all this new tech coming out with OLED screens, display fingerprint scanners, Edge to edge screens, etc, etc.. in the Android world, I really find it hard to justify the costs of the new iPhones. Like they have reached a point where they're ridiculously overpriced in my opinion...

I was then thinking about getting an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus (though it's still pricy IMO), but especially in the 8's case, I feel like it's not enough of an upgrade from my current phone to justify it, as well as multiple people close to me telling me mixed feelings on the 8's performance. The 8 Plus does at least have a bigger 1080p screen, which is nice.

Now I hope you guys can help me with this small dilemma of mine by sharing your thoughts.

What phones are you using? iOS or androids? Pros or Cons?

My heart feeling of iOS is really fighting the logic price of android.

Current phones on my mind:

iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone XR/XS/MAX
One plus 7 / Pro
Samsung S10 / S10+
Samsung Note 9

Everything has cons and pros to me so far, so I would really like to hear your guys' thoughts.

Used OnePlus 3 is $125 on Ebay.  I just bought one due to my other OnePlus 3 needing a new screen and they want $150 for that :P

Honestly, it's still fast as hell and does everything I need.

If really don't need all that in display stuff and edge to edge, tho it is nice... can't get a much better phone for the price.

Otherwise, I like the OnePlus 7 Pro.

How deep into the Apple ecosystem are you? Are there any intrinsic pros to getting an iPhone or does the ecosystem not matter?

Tbh, I'm not that deep into the ecosystem.  I do have an iPad but they're not really linked to each other.

My gf also has an iPhone so with airdrop it's nice from time to time with sharing things, but other than that...

What I like about iOS, but that might be because of the bad taste of android before, is that just everything worked well and it's simple (in my opinion).

Throughout the years my iPhone ran smooth and it always got updates. It's also said that it's more secure than Android, but idk how much of that is actually true.

I don't think I would buy a used phone, or any older model phone in general.. idk but I always they're less secure...

The OP7 pro does look nice though, that 90hz display looks so smooth.

However, the front motorized camera does concern me a bit though.  And I heard that recently more issues like ghost touches have been reported?

So I can't really comment on the security tbh because I'd be spreading half-truths at best I think, would have to inform myslef :D  Maybe someone more informed can comment on that? XD

So looking at my experience with phones, I had a similar rocky start with android phones until I got the OnePlus One. That thing ran smoothly for two years when I switched to an S6 cuz I got it super cheap with a contract. But I regretted it. After maybe 6-8 months it started to feel choppy. Not satisfied AT ALL. I have heard that Samsung has gotten much better with software on the S10 and they have been updating it regularly so far, and I haven't heard complaints from S9 or S8 users about their phones feeling choppy so that might be a thing of the past.

However, what is proven is that Oneplus phones albeit more expensive than ever, have gotten long updates and run smoothly for years. (like justdrawa commented about his OP3). My own OP5 has served me very well and also still runs fast, really fast!

SO

If you want a reliable long-lasting phone I'd suggest a Oneplus device. They have a really good track record.
OR, if you can wait a bit till later this year, Apple is probably going to release a new phone which might be really cool, but probably also very expensive.

Edit:

about the op7p issues: the cam has been tested for 300k runs (thats 150 times a day for 5yrs or sth). yes, in a lab is something else. But as we have seen when Linus did a tour around their facilities they do rigorous testing, so I'd trust them.

Ghost touches on the edge: yes. Has been reported, and also OP is soon to push an update that is supposed to fix it.

Yeah, I am also not sure.. It's just something I've heard before. And in such a locked ecosystem, I'm could see that it's perhaps more secure than other android phones..  but I guess anything could be hacked or infected eventually..

I would be less likely to get a Samsung phone because of the experiences before.  But OnePlus does seem to be doing very well.  In fact both the 7 and 7 pro model appeal to me very much. If it had iOS I would have picked it up as a nobrainer.. but with android..  I just still do have a bit of a bad taste.. But as you also say, anyone I've spoken to about OP is very positive.

I've considered waiting for the new iPhone models to be released (if my current phone's battery doesn't die before), but I don't think the price would change much nor that the current models would suddenly be cheap enough to make more an argument for them than compared to now.

OnePlus' most expensive model is still cheaper than the Budget new iPhone ( the XR).

I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra just to use the smooth experience of iOS that I had till this point... especially if it's actually more secure.

However, the current prices of 1000+ are just too much... the phones are like dead weight. They don't seem to be worth it compared to devices like OP.
But I don't think we'll see any mid-tier price (new) iOS devices any time soon...

You keep mentioning security.  You realize phones don't get hacked much because it's much easier to hack the clouds that people use?

The One Plus 3 is using the same Android version as the 7 Pro, for how long tho I haven't checked.

IMO, I think you're being paranoid.  Or you're rationalizing wanting the iPhone so badly.

Yeah it's true, like I said  my heart is with iOS because of the bad experiences with Android before...   and I don't want to waste money on a bad product that I need to swap out soon...  But I am worried very much about security. You could call it paranoia I guess haha... But it would be spot 1. on the list of things my phone should be.

To be fair and clear.  I do think I would be happy with any of these new devices.. I don't really think there is a that bad of device still out there.. especially looking at the models that I am looking at... But there are just some things that might push me more to one or another..

So far (as even before making this topic) I'm leaning towards OP, giving Android another go.

But I wanted to know other peoples experiences going perhaps from bad Android devices to good ones.

Or switching from iOS to Android or Vice Versa,  to get to know their experiences.

So my stance on the matter (security) is:

The OS itself is probably on the same level when it comes to security. BUT, the simple nature of android is how open it is in regards to what you can do with it. So ultimately an android is only as secure as the person who is using it knows what he/she is doing. If you are clumsy AF and keep visiting dodgy sites and stuff and install some shady apps (because you can) it will be very insecure. I didn't have any issues so far. Kinda like on windows. It can be very insecure if you aren't cautious enough and or constantly make wrong judgment calls.

well i switched from the Xs Max to the Xr due to the connection issues the Xs Max was having, i would get random dropped calls and no service and apple refused to replace it. before you ask about the screen i dont notice any difference between the screens myself, the XR can do everything the Xs Max can do, and in IOS 13 the haptic touch works just like 3D touch. id recommend apple for anyone wanting to use a phone longer then 2 years hands down. also another thing to note i have had better battery life on my Xr then my Xs Max had
