xbox problem with cd reader.

Go to solution Solved by Demonhax,

I remember that little doohicky. Replacing it does squat, the motherboard is shorted somewhere along the lines. I replaced the motor, the disk drive... didn't do me any good for the exact same issue with the exact Lite-On drive (there are multiple versions, this one is not the lucky one).

You can create a bridge somewhere near where the CD drive sits, but requires soldering. It's the only fix I know of, and I can't even remember where to start. If you're willing to do some solder work, I could probably find it. I never did it so I can't prove it works, but you've got an otherwise broken Xbox on your hands, so it's worth trying, hm?

I've found a new drive that was cheap, so i think i will just try to replays the drive, But thanks for the help tho! :D

Hey @Demonhax

Could possibly be the laser dying. How old is the xbox/cd drive? You could replace it with a new one. If you can match the dimensions and the interface of the current one.

Hello!

The Xbox is about 4-5y/o

But when I pu the disk in. It spins for half a second and the laser is just sitting on the edge of the CD.

It looks like the motor for the laser head is dead, hence the laser isn't moving from the edge. I think the cheapest option is to replace the drive with a new working one.

Xbox 360 DVD-ROMs are married to the consoles motherboard, if you want to replace the drive with the one you bought you will either need to swap the PCBs or dump the firmware from the original drive and flash it to the replacement drive.  Looks like you have a Lite-On drive so unless you have some extra equipment then it would probably be easier to swap the PCBs.

I Imagine this isn't that easy?

swapping the PCB is not too hard it is just a couple of wires to move over.  reflashing the firmware is more difficult, check out the program jungle flasher for info on dumping the firmware and flashing it to a new DVD-ROM.

The lite-On srives have about 4 wires soldered to the board but if you cannot solder you can just cut and reconenct the wires to the new drive.

Good thread, my Xbox cd drive has been giving me problems lately giving me 'disc is unreadable' errors randomly, simply opening and closing the drive typically fixes the problem...so it's probably on it's last leg.

You can get a new laser on ebay for about 15 USD you just need to take apart your xbox and check what DVD-ROM you have.
