Looking for an appropriate CPU

Hi guys.

I'm building a PC for the first time in my life. I'm looking for a CPU to fit my requirements.

My main target are two things:

  • World of Warcraft (in preferably 2k) // as smooth as possible
  • Programming, (I'm a computer science major) usually building in C#, Ruby, JScript

    Current items I already bought
  • RTX2070
  • 850 Watt Power supply
  • 500SSD / 1TB HDD

My question is actually: Will a Ryzen R7 2700 be enough in combination with a X470 motherboard? Or do I definitely need an I7 CPU for my personal requirements?

New Ryzen available 7/7, there will be much to look forward to instead of a crusty old i7

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Yes, it may even provide enough time to see how Intel will respond.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Well Intel just announced that they will FINALLY  release their 10 nanometer chips this year. Very little details so far though.

I saw that. I believe the claim is an 18% improvement in IPC. If the chips are capable of current clocks that would be quite an improvement. But Intel has a pretty spotty record with 10 nm announcements.

I agree. It did look like Linus was able to get his hands on some laptops with 10 nm chips in them but he couldn't do too much with them yet.

After some research, I decided to wait for Ryzen's 3rd Gen. Not entirely sure what motherboard I'll need with that CPU but I guess time will tell after their release.

Good call. They will have some new boards to go with them. However, some older chip sets will work if they are labeled so. Some features might be missing though.
