Upgrading my GTX 1050 Ti to GTX 1660 Ti is worth it?

slayertrax
Go to solution Solved by 191x7,

A 1660Ti performs close to a regular 1070. I'd always choose a new card with satisfactory performance over a used card with a tiny bit better average performance.

Also, the i5 7500 has only 4 cores, it would bottleneck the 1070Ti more than it would a 1660Ti, so the performance difference in some titles may not even be there.

Hi, I would ask if it is wise to upgrade my GTX 1050 Ti to GTX 1660 Ti now? or should I wait?

Quick Specs:
CPU: core i5 7500 3.4Ghz

GPU: GTX 1050 Ti

Mobo: MSI B250

Ram: 4x4GB Geil Evo X 2400Mhz

PSU: corsair VS 550

Monitor: BenQ XL2411, 1080p display

Games that I play:
Apex Legends
League of Legends

Dota 2
Witch Hunter 3
GTA V

Watching benchmarks, it's over double the performance boost at 1080p, so I'd recommend it.

If you consider the fps in the games you listed as playable then i would suggest saving some more and getting a 1070/1070ti. A 1660 is a nice card no doubt and definitely a noticeable improvement , so if those games are all you plan on playing, and you plan to stay at 1080p, then its no doubt worth it. The 1050 is kinda sluggish on apex imo.

Just remember that dependin on which model you purchase, you're encroachin on the RTX 2060 lvl of price, so it could be more beneficial to become more future resistant if you were to purchase one of those for a little more - I'm not a fan of the RTX series, whatsoever, but the 2060 has a pretty good reputation as of right now from what I've seen.  Just remember that the future could show a different story w/longevity issues that could arise and you're stuck w/a RTX card that could be a time bomb of when it's goin to fail due to issues seen w/the higher cards.

The GTX series is def. a safe bet if you're lookin to dodge those issues, while still enjoyin yourself.  I'm lookin to get my g/f a GTX 1660 upgrade from a GTX 760, so she can upgrade to 144Hz (haven't decided 1080p or 1440p yet).  It's in the lower price bracket, while still bein a noticeable upgrade.

The old GTX cards have skyrocketed in price for new ones, so I would absolutely avoid them, especially since they're dated tech that's bein pushed out.  If you can get a good deal on a used one, then maybe, but it's still old tech and used on top of that now.  GTX 1050ti --> GTX 1660ti is over double the performance boost w/out a price hike like the old cards due to lower availability and it bein mastered tech to make it more desirable than the RTX series.

Many people're choosin the 1600 series to avoid so many of those issues, while still bein an upgrade and up-to-date for both current and future titles.

yeah, my GPU is struggling on Apex legends, one of the reasons I'm thinking for an upgrade.

there are good deals on preloved(used) 1070 ti that are much cheaper than 1660 Ti, so upgrading on 1070 Ti is better?

It can be, but you'd be rollin the dice.  Old tech on top of used is a major gamble.  The second electricity is run through an electronic, it's value plummets like a vehicle that's been purchased and driven off of the lot.  The card is old tech, used and could work for years or die just after the return policy is allowed.  Spendin a bit more money for updated tech and a 3yr warranty is worth it to me.  It's not worth nicklin and dimin, then bein out of the money if it dies far before gettin your moneys worth out of it.

You also don't have to get the TI version of the card to save some money.  You can get the GTX 1660 and save a good amount of money.  The best card in the slot currently is $220 on New Egg, which's a good deal, especially for 1080p gamin.  Mid-ranged cards for 1080p are great, so you don't have to shell out the extra money for performance, especially if you're willin to play in High/Very High settings, instead of Ultra for more demandin games for the future.

The title of the post is about upgrading to a 1660 Ti

and yes a 1660 Ti performs relatively the same as a 1070 AND a 980 Ti for that matter.

If I were inclined to upgrade in to this range I might go for the slightly better performance in the slightly more expensive 2060.

but as this would create a roughly 42% bottleneck you might want to think about getting a better CPU. or if you're going intel, get something i7-7XXXK or higher
