.. dont buy bose -_- buy a seperate system from a decent audio company. Do not mention bose around audiophiles lol.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

More specifically, something like this for a 3.0 then add a sub and surrounds later. https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVRX2400H-Receiver-wireless-technology/dp/B06XYD442J/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=denon+avr&qid=1556898735&s=gateway&sr=8-3

5.1 surround has to powerful and rather large to be enjoyable, i'm talking from experience, even my Monitor Audio Bronze 5.1 setup wasn't good enough for me because my room was far too small, i ended up going with a pair of Dali Zensor 7s in stereo.

A PS Audio Sprout and a pair of Dali Zensor 1 would be a nice piece of kit for under $1000.

I agree with this. Bose makes fine headphones but god awful speakers for the price. for 1200 you can get a very nice 3.0 with a decent denon/onkyo/pioneer/yamaha etc. AVR, then add a sub and surrounds later.

If he plans on going for the surround setup he could follow the receiver route like you mentioned above.

Yep, actually @James Aplin take a look at this:
