Hi guys it’s my first post here so please excuse my ignorance.I was strongly thinking about getting a laptop for school as I’m going to move away in a few months and likely won’t be able to take my beloved desktop with me , I am leaning towards apple, but I’d rather not buy into the Mac ecosystem without trying the OS out for a few days , I have a ryzen 2nd gen system with an nvidia gpu so I doubt whether I’ll be able to run it on baremetal , I was thinking of running it in VMware/virtual box as they usually were very handy for other virtualization projects but I’m not sure if since I have only 1 gpu I’ll be able to use a hardware renderer in my vm and that’s why I would like to ask if macOS Mojave’s would be usable with a software renderer as I simply wanted a test drive of the OS for a couple of days to see if apple is the way to go for me.

Thanks for the guide , I did consider doing it but I’m not sure if Nvidia has proper drivers for Mojave and as far as I know running high Sierra would involve

a parched kernel / some workarounds and whilst sure it’s doable I’m just not sure if I’d like to completely wipe my drive and install macOS as I believe macs use a different type of partition map.Still I’ll have a look and thanks for the quick response

To answer your questions...

Yes macOS can run on VMWare but it requires a patch, I can't link it here but Google VMWare Unlocker. Is it worth it? No. It runs slow as all hell and VMWare Tools doesn't work so you have only VGA video.

You can run it on bare metal, you're correct that you'll have to run High Sierra but that's not a big deal (it actually has some advantages) and as for custom kernels, Google AMD OSX and you'll find a nice site with a pre built image ready to go including* full instructions on how to get running.

Yes, Apples use HFS/APFS, I simply use a second drive and install to that. Clover will find your Windows install and add it to the boot menu. Heck I've even done triple boot with Windows, Linux & macOS using Clover before.

*turns out they pulled the pre compiled images from the site, I guess Apple were not happy with them distributing modified macOS.
