Some people advise against buying from places like eBay, but I've had nothing but great experiences by buying from eBay resellers. Very cheap and no issues so far (about 18 months after using the keys and counting).

I would make sure that the seller has lots of good feedback first though. I wouldn't risk it for someone with little or no good feedback, or someone with a few bad feedback.

Yeah, on the microsoft website you will see the option to create a USB installer. You download that to your USB stick and boot from there in your BIOS for a fresh install.

One tip to remember though - if you have multiple drives (like an HDD and an SSD) then only have the SSD connected while you install windows. Otherwise it can fuck up and install some elements on the HDD too. Then windows won't run from then on unless both drives are connected. It can be a right pain!

I gave my brother a Windows 7 retail key (was spare and boxed) and that worked for his Win10 install.

If you have a spare 7 key, or one from a dismantled PC, you can try that in Win10.

Install Win 10 in trial mode in the version you wish to use (Windows 7 home or Windows 10 home keys will match, but only Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro keys match!). You have a few days or very few limits in trial mode, so it gives you time to check your existing key works. And if not you can then order a new one.

:)

sometime you can get around this, i have done it in the past. Try this before you buy a new key.

If you linked your Microsoft account to your Windows 10 digital license on the device BEFORE you make the hardware change, you can reactivate Windows using your sign in info:

In the troubleshooter, select I changed hardware on this device recently, and then select Next.

Enter your Microsoft account and password, and then select Sign in. You’ll also need to enter the password for your local account if the Microsoft account you entered isn’t a connected account.

From the list of devices that are linked to your Microsoft account, select the device that you’re currently using, select the check box next to This is the device I’m using right now, and then select Activate.

If you don’t see the device you’re using in the list of results, make sure that you’re signed in using the same Microsoft account you linked to the Windows 10 digital license on your device.

That's good to know. That MS are tracking the account and number of active logins, not the actual hardware. So you could potentially deactivate an old computer, to use the Win10 licence/account on the new one.

I have windows 10 home builders key for my desktop and was able to go to the junk yard and find a few old PC's with windows 7 pro OEM keys on the cases and plugged them in and it activated my desktop to 10 pro and also on my dell laptop.
