Are they really paying for it

So I have a  pair of Dell servers and I see all over youtube guys installing windows server XXX are they really paying for it? I mean there is just no way some of these folks are really paying this kinda money for a home lab, so what happens if you use the trial for 180 days and it expires can you just reinstall for another 180 days and do you loose all settings and configurations when that happens? Just curious because my 1 server was preloaded with 2016 but I turned it into an unRAID server as I felt there was no sense in polishing a new setup with an OS that was going to expire on me figured no sense putting in the time to learn the ins and outs as I have no need to spend that kinda money for my home environment

Yes. Most People with homelabs have an MSDN license through their employer or they purchased it before it became stupid expensive. This isn't uncommon.
