Is there a reason you are going with that cpu? Why not the E3-1230v2? Intel based machines are much better for hackintosh's, more stable, and in general, just easier to set up.

The E3 consumes less than half the power of the 8350 and will give you very similar performance, for only ~40 dollars more. I'd go with the E3. Also if overclocking is an issue, know that you can overclock the E3 pretty well to around 3.8GHz, maybe more.

Edit: If you live near a microcenter you could pick 1 up for just 199, http://www.microcenter.com/product/400271/Xeon_E3_1230V2_33GHz_LGA_1155_Boxed_Processor

Because the Mac OS is only used on Apple computers (Apple doesn't license it to OEMs), drivers/OS Support only exist for components that you find in Apple computers. There are no Apple computers using AMD CPUs, and Mac OS does not have any support for AMD CPUs. The only way to run Mac OS on an AMD machine is to use a legacy kernel, basically some guy literally programmed his own support for AMD processors. This is only available for Snow Leopard I think. As for motherboard choice unfortunately since it's such a rare thing there's no list of board compatibility like there is with Intel. Although if you want to look around, Realtek Audio and Broadcom LAN are a good place to start.

There are ways around, getting OSX to work with AMD CPU's, it will only work correctly with a virtual box.

I don't really care if it is snow leopard or not. I really only want Mac OS for Imovie and Garageband.

The links I gave should help alot, as long as you have a Athlon or newer cpu, it will work with no problems.

 • 3 months later...

I am running a AMD Hackintosh on a Gigabyte motherboard; it's the GA-990FXA-UD3 (AM3+ Socket) board will a 8 core "Bulldozer" processor. It's litely overclocked to 4.3 Ghz, with liquid cooling, 32 GB DDR3-1333 RAM, and it has a EVGA/nVidia GTX 580 graphics card with 2 GB DDR5 RAM. It took me some time and research to get OS X 10.6.8 running on it with AnV's Legacy Kernel, and patching the insn/dyld shared libraries; you'll also have to rewrite a fraction of the DSDT to get all the hardware working bug free. Just depends on how much time you want to spend getting everything working right... There is a lot less drama getting a Hackintosh working on a Intel motherboard. Furethermore, I have a multi-boot drive setup on my rig; Windows 8 solidstate for normal usage, Windows 7 drive for gaming and legacy applications, Fedora/RHL/SUSE drive for when I need to do something in Linux and the LiveCD doesn't cut it, and finally OSX 10.6 / OSX 10.7 drive to play in Mac Land. Obviously, I have a full tower, 1200 watt power supply, and I am not worried about the electric bill.
