So, this past weekend, I got an ssd for the first time. I just got a 120gb sata drive because I just wanted to put windows on it and use as a boot drive for now. So here is what I did and the problem I am having.

1. Backed up my 2tb hdd onto my external hard drive that I have.
2. Deleted anything and everything I could to get the partitions small enough to clone over to the ssd (Went from about 900gb to 60gb).
3. I cloned it
4. Set ssd at boot drive
5. Formatted old hdd to wipe it.
6. Recovered backup from external hard drive onto formatted hdd

So everything is fine with the transfer of windows and boot. But now, some of my apps (Discord) weren't working properly. So I decided to uninstall and reinstall. Now it keeps popping up error after I download it and it says "Installation has failed" and then prompts me to open the set up log for more information.

Other problem is that my steam games, a long with others, will not let me make a shortcut anymore because it says there is already one...

Please help, this is the first time I've had any issues with stuff that I have done on my pc, Thank You!

Do a clean windows install, there's no fixing a corrupted build, you can try but it's very hard to figure out everything that went wrong.

How do I do that with out buying windows again? I'm new to this aspect, sorry.

I would assume, but not sure where to find it. It was a pre built digital storm PC that I have upgraded. So Windows was installed when I got it

Try to find the key, and download the Windows USB Creation Tool here : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Just grab an 8GB USB and follow the instructions to install Windows from fresh, I would advise disconnecting all the drives except for the 120GB just incase you don't mess up formatting important data, make sure to delete all the partitions on the 120GB drive.

select-another-partition-to-install-wind
It might have different partitions like this, so delete all of them (on the same drive)

Ok thanks, and I assume this would mean that all my apps and games would have to be manually reinstalled. Like it was a brand new PC?

You can also install windows without a key and install the key later, windows will still work normally without a key, but you will have a "Windows Not Activated" mark and it prevents you from changing some settings but all in all it works fine.

Also if your Windows is connected to a Hotmail account, I think it will activate if you sign in on the same Hotmail account on the fresh copy of windows (not sure about that)

on the 120GB yes, make sure to back up everything there, and again remove the other drives when installing windows just to be safe.

Go into the Users folder that's where all the important data is, like Save Game and other personal files.

Ok, I only have 2 games on the 120gb, cause that's all I could fit. So would everything on my 2TB HDD still be there if I recover it? I just backed it up and the back up is still on my external.

Well, no. It has everything from when I restored it before. I think I may have answered my own question... If I did, I am sorry HA

You have nothing to lose if you disconnect SATA and Power from the HDD before installing Windows so you don't mistakenly format them, not that Windows forces you to format the HDD as well, but it gives you the option to do that, that's what i meant by keeping it safe.

Basically no, a new Windows installation is not related to the HDD, it only applies to the 120GB SSD. (assuming that's where you install it)

Yeah ok , I gotcha. Well do I need to delete the windows files that are still on the HDD from before? Or can those stay on there, even though I will be using the ssd for windows?

Can you check something, go into Disk Management and maximize the window and give me a screenshot

Oh you haven't deleted all the extra partitions on the 2TB drive, I don't recommend it but it will certainly work fine i guess? very hard to explain

I wasn't sure which ones to delete. That was my biggest problem when doing all of this sunday, was that I was sure what all to delete and what not to

I think I am about to go to the store and grab a usb drive and just do the clean install. I am slightly OCD, so all of this error stuff is driving me insane. Thank you for your help!

You can clean the Windows files on the 2TB drive without losing any data, but it gets technical quick using the old fashioned way.

I mean, when things are explained to me, I am a quick learner. I guess I need to get those files off, even if I do the clean install, since I'll still be using that same drive after.
