Is 534 pixels per inch overkill? My Galaxy S7 edge sits at a pixel per inch of 534 !!! Isn't that just way too much to see? For reference, a monitor with a diagonal length of 27" at 4k only has a DPI (or PPI) of 163. Is there something I'm missing?

Nope, it's not, because we're talking about a Amoled screen, which has only 2 subpixels per pixel, instead of 3.

The "real effective" ppi will be less than 534 ppi.

It is actually possible to see the difference between 1080p and 1440p on a modern smartphone, if it's Oled. The difference might be quite small, and you'll have to look very close, but the difference is visible.

Switched from an S7 Edge to an Oneplus 6T. I saw the difference when looking close. But it doesn't bother if you "use it normally".

@ Monitor: Different thing, it's further away. I doubt you use your phone at your arm's length ^^

Its much closer to your face at many times. if you ever get like a foot away from your tv you will easily see pixels. It would ruin the phones look if you could see the pixels.

If you sit 1 foot away from a 4k monitor with a pixel density of 184 (a 4k monitor that is 24in diagonally) you would have a tough time making out the pixels. If you double that pixel density to 367 ppi and you sit 6in away from your screen, you would have an equally tough time seeing the individual pixels. so if you have a tough time seeing the pixels at 6in (~15cm), it just doesn't make sense to me that they crammed so many pixels into such a small screen. I can't for the life of me tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p on a 5in screen.
