Which OS?

I want to run PLEX media server on Windows Server but I want my media storage to be ZFS-based. I am familiar with FreeNAS so that is my preferred choice for NAS OS.

My hardware is:

  • Supermicro MB
  • 8 core Xeon (Broadwell-EP)
  • 64 GB (4x 16 GB) 2400 MHz ECC Reg RAM
  • LSI 9300-8i HBA
  • 4x 8 TB HDD WD Red
  • 2x 120 GB Intel Data Center SSD

I was thinking I could run a hyper-visor and create two virtual machines:

(NAS) FreeNAS with 2 cores, 48 GB RAM and LSI 9300-8i pass through for my HDDs

(PLEX) Windows Server with 6 cores, 4 GB RAM and somehow mirror my two SSDs for the OS drive

Thoughts?
