Bitcoin Mining thoughts

Hi,

I've never bit-coin mined myself, although it interests me. I was just thinking, why couldn't they incorporate the process of bit coin mining with other processes that could benefit everyone. For example, while still keeping transactions secure could Folding be incorporated, of even something like SETI research.

If people are solving maths problems for money, why cant they solve problems that we would all benefit from? Are there limitations?

For the most part casual mining for bitcoins is almost dead as it takes more power then value of the bitcoin

I'm not quite sure on my overall opinion, but I'll most certainly say that I hate the fact that GPU prices are rising because of it.
