Hello all,

I've just ordered a Ryzen 7 2700X with B450 Chipset motherboard to replace my ageing i5-3570k and Z77 board.

I've got my current install of Windows 10 64bit installed on an SSD, and was wondering whether it'd be simple as plug in to motherboard, choose boot drive in BIOS, then continue as normal?

Or would the change from intel to AMD 'spook' the OS install a bit (I have no idea)?

Thanks,

Rhys

I'd recommend a clean install since you're changing the motherboard chipset manufacturer.

It can have problems though so be prepared.

What kind of problems would I be looking out for?

I was trying to avoid a clean install - I have an install on a 1TB HDD, an install on a 120GB SSD at the moment, and just bought an M.2 SSD to copy my 120GB SSD install to. All of these installs are getting a bit confusing haha - so I was hoping to copy the 120GB SSD install and then just wipe the 120GB SSD and use it as spare storage.

Your computor will most likely say "No" when you try booting into Windows.

Also, Windows license is stored in the motherboard, so you cannot re-use old code.

All the usual boot related problems, which is quite the long list.

I recommend uninstalling all Intel related stuff beforehand. Using the Windows Media Creation Tool to create a usb drive with windows 10, so you can use the boot repair utility if needed. And also linking your cdkey to a Microsoft account.

Make sure to jot it down just in case it doesn't take. If you have a newer license where the key is hidden, you'll have to ring MS in the case it doesn't work.

Please ensure you have a backup of all your important things.

While Windows is better these days, it's not at the level of Linux for example. That said, the risk of data loss is very low but recovery of a failed migration can be tedious.

It's actually an old Windows 8 licence upgraded to Windows 10 (as many people did) so I think I may need to go through Microsoft anyway to find my licence key. Seems like it'll just be easier to do a fresh install and tear my hair out for a few days working out which install is which!

Just an update for you all, thanks for everyone's input, here's how it turned out.

Put together PC, plugged SSD back into SATA port, booted first time all fine - recognised I had a different processor and memory. Downloaded all new drivers and installed them. Restarted PC, when I booted back into desktop, Windows 10 needed to be activated. Put in my old Windows 8 Activation code (I upgraded from Win8 > Win10 when it was the free upgrade) and Windows activated first time - this code is now linked with my microsoft account. All running smoothly.

Cloned my old SSD to my new M.2 SSD and everything's so much faster!

Thanks for all your help!

Rhys
