Just bought a 6700k and have been testing it. It didn't seem to vary much in temperature around 32c idle.

Monitoring in HW monitor, the temps are flying from 35-50 erratically, is this normal? They seem to just fly up and down. I don't remember this with my 4790. Cooling is fine with new Mx2 applied and enough of it.

Your idle temp of 32c is normal.  If its climbing up to 50c at 0 idle, then it could be a contact problem with CPU and your HSF or block.  Can you tell us your full load temps ?  Or gaming temps ?

I recieved a max load temp of 84 earlier, thorugh that might have just be a spike, temps are usually 70is on load

To a streamlined stresstesting with some application to have a max temp reading. It's important to keep an eye on CPU Vcore. You can use prime 95, aida 64 fpu test, cinebench, whatever you want as long as it's a repeatable test so we can compare with other results.

84C doesn't sound bad if we consider high voltage/OC on the chip, but it may be a red flag if we are speaking of stock everything. Btw, state brand and model of your cooling solution.

This is stock, but XMP enable in my z270h mobo, does that maybe change something.

I am noticing high temps under load 75ish, with max temps up to 84c. The cooler isn't stock it's an arctic alpine 11 rev.2.

Should I stop what I'm doing can these temps damage the CPU right now?

no damage can be done at that temperature. Those CPU's fare well up until 100ºC. The thing is that heatsink is "meh" for a 6700k. That's why you are seeing high temperatures. You may even be in a 25+ºC room temperature, and who knows how you dealt with the internal case airflow.

As a side note, XMP messes up the voltage quite often, can you post a complete reading of msi afterburner statistics after a 10minute usage? you may be running  a higher vcore than necessary.

I have a couple of fans active a decent noctua. Surely that heatsink would be fine at stock clocks.

Doesn't the XMP just affect the RAM?

xmp is a memory profile, which can make changes in cpu states and several voltages. Some of them have bigger impact than other in temperature. That' swhy we need data to point out which one is out of order.

I hit 87c earlier. Does XMP change anything else?

Taking the side off the case in max load gaming I am hitting around 79 now, so not too bad.

I will be fitting another case fan and better cooler soon.

XMP applies an overclock, it changes voltages to the ram and other stuff too so yes, when I got my 6700K I tested it, hated the temps so I delidded it. I have the following.

I'm running custom waterloop too. Hope this puts your mind at rest.
