Hi Linus,

I saw you talking about Quadro graphics cards. I have got the MSI WE63 8SJ last month and It has Nvidia Quadro P2000 graphics card along with Intel core i7 8750H processor. However, when I try to run gpu acceleration for both Ansys and Abaqus software I got error that my graphics card does not support gpu acceleration. Thus, I cannot see any benefit for having this card on my laptop because its performance is always 1% in task manager. Why do you think MSI and other brands use this card for thier workstations if it cannot do gpu acceleration?

Pretty sure it forces you to route the nvidia card through the intel graphics

not sure about Ansys, but if you're having GPU problems with Abaqus, have you updated the environment file?

I have updated the "graphicsConvig.env" file as you described above and I still have the same problem. when I tick ''Use GPGPU acceleration", the job runs forever until I terminate it after 30 minutes of running while CPU usage is at 100%. On the other hand, running the job without GPGPU acceleration took about a minute to finish.

If I can give a more technical answer to your question (at least in terms of ANSYS)

1) It depends on what type of problem you're trying to solve, the solver and your geometry; are you using ANSYS mechanical? If so, the solver can only use your cpu as it is solving each node/ element as it goes. As this is sequential, it cannot use your graphics card. Your graphics card will only be used in post-processing and you don't need to enable it.

 

2) If you're doing CFD and using CFX, CFX doesn't support GPU acceleration in its solver as its in the nature of the way it solves the turbulence/ discretisation scheme. CFX can only use your GPU in its post processor to render your model from the data fed from the solver.

If you're using fluent, you need to enable GPU acceleration via settings the GPGPU setting at the interface when you launch the fluent preprocessor. You can plug in a command to double check if its enabled (check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YH9p2KbRls).

 

Fluent can also use gpu acceleration in its post processor for, again, displaying and rendering the model results.
