so i just got finished building my first ever gound up pc. ive watched alot of videos on what to do next as for boot drive and drivers etc... my question is, can i just plug in my old hdd(storage) and ssd(boot) from the other pc and go from there. ive upgraded pretty much everything except from the storage so id hate to start from zero and lose all the stuff i have from the old rig.

-Moved to Storage Devices-

That will work, just make sure your new hardware supports your old OS, run sysprep Generalize(this will clear out any and all drivers), and you should be fine. Also make sure your Windows activation is linked to your Microsoft account, otherwise you will need a new product key.

is there somewhere specific to go for the sysprep? and does it need to be done from the old pc and downloaded onto a usb or done directly to the new pc?

Hit Windows + R on your keyboard.

type in "sysprep" and hit Enter. Run the application in the folder that pops up. You want to Generalize your operating system and shutdown when sysprep is finished. Slap the drive in the new machine, fire it up, and(assuming it's Windows 8 or newer) it'll work perfectly.

you just plug the drive in see if it works,

if not, reinstall windows on new drive/ partition and transfer old data when you have time. prefer not to wipe old drive and use it as slave, till a day you rarely access it

yeah it was windows 10 i recently got an ssd and made it  a boot drive so im relatively up to date with the OS. only problem is that the old pc is out of commission(dissassembled) and used some of the power cables to put into the new pc. is a flash drive ok cuz thats all i have.

Just move the cables back from the new PC to the old so you can sysprep it, then.

You'll want to shutdown the new system anyway, might as well sysprep it while you have it turned off.

Sysprep clears your old drivers. It's recommended to do that whenever you make drastic hardware changes.

That said, you can sysprep from your current system now, just change the option to restart instead of shutdown when sysprep is finished. After that, you can reinstall all the various drivers for your motherboard, GPU, etc.

Is Windows activated?

yeah i was just using it

Activated is different than installed.

Open Settings and see if it's giving you a thing in the bottom saying "Windows isn't activated"
