Cores or clock speed

So I'm putting together a new PC.

It's not for gaming, but for general PC work like E-mail, Microsoft-Office, browsing, etc.

Now I was wondering if I should pick a CPU with multiple cores, or if I should go for a CPU with few cores but high clock speed.

Thanks.

If you don't have the ability to make that general decision yourself, don't go CPU surfing. Get a general all around processer:

3 2200g, i3 8100 somein' like that.

Do you have any specific CPU's in mind?

My first option was the ryzen 7 2700X

Money isn't the problem, even though a 7 2700X might be a little overkill

Is it going to do any gaming at all? If so build an R3 2200G APU machine with some 3000mhz RAM, what are you doing that an R3 2200G isn't fast enough?

If not then just buy any old laptop with an SSD, or used business machine with an SSD for $200 or lower.

Your go to CPU will be the 2200G or 2400G.

Buying a 2700x would involve buying a GPU

Thanks Golden. I forgot about the no iGPU part. I ought to keep that in mind. @Ninthendo64 A Vega 8 will be faster than a 710 or 1030 any day

Okay, but you tell us simple, than you tell us OP, then you tell us no gaming. I'm sorta confused. Is this machine supposed to be high powered?

so you're doing no gaming and light web browsing/spreadsheet work? I think a dual core would be fine, a pentium or athlon would serve you well.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Then you don't need a desktop PC at all even. Or if you want one just get a used business machine that's cheap and throw an SSD into it

this one's $200 for a 4th gen i7

It doesn't matter for your use case

otherwise it depends on the software, if Blender it loves cores, if gaming 5ghz is better than 4ghz in general.

Honestly it doesn't really matter in real world performance.I would say technically cores for multi tasking but as long as you don't have like 100+ chrome tabs open it won't really matter.RAM would also play a much larger part in the equation tho

4+ cores, high clockspeed, but you could do those things on a potato, so there is something you are not telling us.

It doesn't really matter is what we're saying. That's why CPU mfrs moved away from GHz naming schemes! Just take an expert's recommendation.

This is a base suggestion. Consult others. if you are in the US, visit Micro Center. They're great. Also, if money isn't a factor, there are also some things that can be changed, like dual-channel RAM. Ask around IRL, but you could try this.

Thats kinda overkill.

Just buy a used optiplex and SSD and call it a day

If your in a office all day put that extra money towards a better chair or a ergonomic keyboard and you'll pribaly get more benefit

There isn't much point in spending more than you need to.

There's two options that would be perfect for your use case without spending more money than you need to: @AKinsey2468's build list or a used office PC from eBay. Both would do the job absolutely fine.

You can go and build a PC which is absolutely overkill, that's fine by me, but personally I don't think it's worth it.

For your use case, none of them matter. Web browsers and Microsoft Word are both very easy things for a PC to run so clock speeds and core counts make no difference.
