Putting OS on SSD?

Go to solution Solved by Willson94,

Think my previous post has been misunderstood i mean you just install windows on the ssd

plug the hdd into a secondary sata port no reason for the pc to be on at this point

boot from the ssd into new windows install on the ssd, you can select what drive to boot from in bios

remove required files from the hdd onto the ssd such as documents and files

shut down

remove hdd

and you are left with a pc with an ssd with everything you need on it and a hdd to put into the laptop if you want to keep it

That's not going to work, two C: drives don't agree with each other, trust me it's happened a few times.

not sure what you meant by this im not suggesting he keep the two drives in forever just temporarily to get what he needs off the hdd and then remove it from the system nothing wrong with that

So i have a bit of weird situation.

I bought an ssd to replace the one in my laptop, but only for a week whilst i need it so i need to put everything on the ssd form the hdd (hdd 80gb ssd 120gb)

but then im going to put the ssd in my pc after that week and i want it to boot the os and store some games and premiere pro and stuff.

Does anyone have any advice? or easy ways to do it?

Thanks

Use Clonezilla, it will clone your HDD onto your SSD.

It's going to be very unstable if you install OS on it from laptop then transfer it to your pc. It's fine if your transferring just files or games but not with OS.

Best way

Put SSD in PC

Clean windows install

Install programs

Plug in HDD to PC

Take files off HDD that you need documents, premiere pro files, place on SSD

Remove HDD

That's not going to work, two C: drives don't agree with each other, trust me it's happened a few times.

If i format it before i change systems will it still work?

It could work momentarily, but after a few weeks it might start bsoding and you'll need to reinstall windows again. Id just fresh OS install on your PC use a flash drive to copy all your files from your laptop's hdd (documents, music, videos, important stuff) and after you install OS on SSD from PC transfer all files from flash drive to PC SSD.

Nah, it will be fine, probably, i am running win 7+vista dual boot where both drivers are C: for ~ 2 years now. If you plug the secondary hdd when the system is powered on there shouldnt be any problems(I've done this when cloning Windows installs a few times) what dosen't work usaly is runnig the same two HDD's in the same time during boot, especialy if you are using Windwos 8. (Some sort of disk conflict happens, I don't remember what exactly since I last encountered this a few months back)

There's your problem, you should never play around with hardware while your PC is on.

If it's in an external enclosure there should be no problems. If we are talking about Pluging the HDD in the SATA interface while the PC is on, it wouldnt be the best for the drive, but probably nothing bad would happen, since HDD's don't really die anymore of sudden power loss (Mostly ;) )
