need help with laptop touchpad

I have a Gateway NV 5378u laptop, and recently the left click button stopped working(I suspect hardware failure). i thought, no problem, ill just use tap to click.  that no longer works either its an Alps touchpad. any ideas on how i can make this laptop usable again, i currently have mapped the click to the left button, i need a new way to use it. reinstall of os did not fix it(not the reason for reinstall). anny software out there to enable tap to click would be nice.

Energy can not be created nor destroyed, just converted to a different Type of energy.
