Adding a soundcard?

Hey, 

Quick little question. 
In my computer lessons for dummies i learned a long long time ago that adding several peripherals will decrease the amount of workload set on the cpu. This includes gpu's and audio card. I was wondering it this still applies today? 
Lets say i have a r5 2600 cpu on a x470 gaming gigabit aorus motherboard. Will the addition of a audiocard improve performance in games such as total war ? Will this improvement be meaningfull? would it work with a 80 dollar soundcard or should i look into 300 dollar soundcards???

The mobo handles most of the sound nowadays so it wouldn't actually impact your performance much

yea maybe for better sound reasons but yea i'm not sure about the performance part so i'll go with Tommy's reaction here
