I was thinking how LMG backups so much information. Having to backup every video file and every edit I'm sure would take up gobs of space and time. Slowing down LMG. I was thinking... What about deletion guidelines? Steps to not hoarding :).

Or...

I can just hear Linus hissing, "My Precious!" in that shot.

All seriousness (?) aside, LMG does have to backup a huge amount of data for their operation but they have explored numerous ways to do so as quickly and cost effectively as possible (and shared some of that with us in their videos; not every avenue explored was a resounding success for them but one never knows for sure until one tries).

For mostof us, LMG's needs and systems are way, way overkill and we can do fine with less epansives solutions and guidelines. Every person has to examine their own needs and budget to come up with a solution best for them. To grossly oversimplify it, one has to weigh the cost of having enough capacity to accommodate a certain amount of data vs the value of the data to be kept. That will vary from person to person and what is right for one may not be right for another.

For example, some people value old family photos far more than others do. Others will value video or music files more than others. Not everyone will digitize all their personal data (taxes, receipts, titles, etc.) while others will go as paperless as legally possible. The cost of backing up data also has o be weighed against the cost of recovery.

I have a lot of data that would be expensive to replace plus almost as much that cannot be replaced if lost so I have a pretty anal (and expensive) backup scheme in place (I'm also paperless as legally possible so some of that data is critical). Most people will not have needs so drastic. I do cull as much duplicate and unnecessary data as possible to keep costs down and because it simply isn't necessary to keep obsolete data, such as articles on how to use things or receipts for things I no longer have. Once I have final files for data I've created, it's usually no longer necessary to keep scratch files used in the creation of the data so those go away.

Again, each person has to decide for themselves what data needs to be kept and what can be sent to computer Never Never Land.

As long as anyone is oppressed, no one will be safe and free.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

Very good point. I'm fairly certain Linus isn't backing up every single thing, like things that aren't mission critical or never will be looked at again. Deleting things that will never be looked at again is a cost effective and time saving ability :). I was someone who backed up everything until I recognized.. I can always reinstall Windows with a recovery flash drive and if I'm wise with my own data never have to really worry about buying more storage than what I have.

I understand Linus is in a different situation with different needs. I wanted to bring this to the surface.

I am curious about what is deleted though. I think a video taking measure of the things you don't need to backup would be helpful. It may invigorate some people to actually backup.
