Hello everyone,

I want to create some video programming tutorials. I'm looking for a screen recorder software to do this. Other than recording it should be able to:

- allow me to easily draw shapes(rectangles, circles, arrows, etc) and place text on the window that the people watching can see so I can explain certain aspects better

- record microphone input also

- preferably opensource(free)

Anyone that has experience with using such a software could recomment me one? I'm mostly on Windows because I game a lot but I can switch to Ubuntu also if there is some sort of video editor that does what I need which only works on Linux. Thank you.

You can use OBS to record, and Resolve to Edit for Free, or Vegas Pro can be found on the cheap.

But drawing while recording is likely to be a pain to figure out, and you should just do that in the editing afterwards along with a new dub over the footage

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I think the easier thing to do would be to use a separate software for drawing stuff on the screen if I don't find a recorder that does both. You know any for that? I prefer to draw directly on the screen and not open an app gui like paint, word, etc.

You'd have to figure out how to overlay Epic Pen onto OBS I think, may require a 2nd PC with a capture card or NDI plug in to use your network as a capture card

Ok epic pen looks amazing. Easy to use and has all things I need(if I buy it).I think I will spare 20$ to get it since it looks like it's exactly what I'm looking for. I don't understand what you meant by I should have a second PC tou. Can't I just start OBS which just records my screen and while I record I use the magic pen to do the drawing? Isn't that how it's gonna go?

You'd have to google around for it, but isn't there a free trail of Epic Pen or something to test it? Or there's likely a free alternative.

Epic pen's free version lets you do some basic stuff like drawing on screen, changing pen size, taking a screenshot etc. The full version offers additional features like drawing shapes, using a white board, etc. I will search for an alternative. Also OBS is free right?

I have installed OBS and played with it a bit. Seems very good for what I want and easy to use. I will most probably buy magic pen also since I like it very much.  :D

Obs + magic pen seems like a good combination for what I need.
