I found an old Windows 7 Home Premium install disk, and I'm wondering if I should roll back from 10 to 7? I only ever game on my PC.

I have a Ryzen CPU, and no GPU at the moment. I believe extended support ends in 2020. I have drive to back up everything and whatnot. Is it truly worth my time?

Why do you want to downgrade? Support is ending so soon, you might as well stick to Windows 10 (for now).

Nope, IMO you're better off getting used to Windows 10, as trying to live in the past means not having security updates pretty soon here.  There are skins and mods you can download for Win10 to try to make it look and feel more like Win7 but it's not like you're going to get more FPS just for downgrading.

I would stay where you are. Unless you absolutely hate windows 10 then don't bother. As horrible as windows 10 is, there's some features that I use and some stupid things windows 7 does with updates. The only time i'd use windows 7 is on my old laptop that doesn't have graphics drivers for w10.

I think people have gotten it to work and there's nothing really wrong with running windows 7 on ryzen other than some usb driver issues.

There's plenty wrong with it. Chipset drivers handle much more than simply USB, PCIe & SATA functions are handled by the chipset for example.

Having something work and having something work properly are two very different things. You wouldn't run your GPU on Microsoft's default VGA driver for very long so why run your entire system on the equivalent?

That's not even mentioning exploit mitigation code which again, only works/exists in Windows 10.

when you install 10 on a hd 2000-4000 series gpu microsofts default driver is actually the only driver that exists for the cards and the fastest driver for them as well. fun factoid. lol

You do realize that by "Default VGA driver" he meant a literal general VGA driver that isn't made for any 1 specific video card.  Like the drivers most servers use because they only need the monitor to show up.  He was NOT referring to the driver that windows update finds and installs, which is a manufacturer certified driver in most cases made for that GPU and tested WHQL.

Ok, I'm willing to potentially learn something here as clearly I misunderstood the message (thanks for being nice about clearing up this communication to me and not being condescending at all).

I would be surprised to learn this but you did imply that Windows 10 with an HD 4870 GPU will not let you install the "made for Windows 8.1 x64" Catalyst 13.4 beta driver (released well after Win10 was around)?  It won't install period making the default MS one the fastest driver to use?

you can install it if you want but the driver is pretty much garbage as the windows 10 driver "8.970.100.9001" is much newer and runs better than any of the old windows 8 drivers

To clarify, the AMD HD2000 to 4000 series has a perfectly working driver available, it can only be installed from Windows update and it doesn't support CCC but it does work.

I was talking about the VGA driver, as in the one shown in the image above.

Microsoft updated the WDDM from 8.1 to 10, no 8/8.1 display driver would install and work on 10.

If you have a running system with windows 10, why roll back? If you like windows 7 more than 10, then yeah, down grade. I personally run a 7 box, I really hope the next version of windows is better than 10. I like my computer to work like a computer, not a tablet.

In that case then yeah, I was wrong. There really is no reason to not downgrade if that's what OP wants, besides the soon ending security support, lacking software support and no DX12 support I mean
