Raid or other backup solution

My current storage config is a 120gb samsung ssd as a boot drive and a 3 tb as a mass storage. So I am going to study next year and I want to keep all the data I have safe. So my question is would it be better to buy another 3tb drive and make a raid, buy another drive and have it as a automatic backup drive, buy a 3tb external drive and put all my data onto that or some other backup or redundancy solution.

yea I know it isn't a back up but would it be more beneficial/secure than cloning or another external solution 

 

I would prefer to keep my files on physical hdds than online storage no matter how encrypted it is 

 

Also note that whatever solution I use will most likely kept in the same room as my PC

Buy an external drive and run a backup solution like Acronis True Image (paid).

 

RAID will never protect you against a virus. Internal drive has the same problem.

Pain to open up the pc and plug/unplug the hdd every time. Besides, what do you do if the unit is stolen or catches fire?

cant do much about it only way to avoid that is to have it backed up off site     and it wouldn't be used much so I wouldn't mind the hassle 

 

With external unit one can easily unplug it and take it into another room or store in a closet or drawer. No foolproof, but a little more protection than inside the same case.
