Hi. My PC is stuck at starting windows screen. I can't even boot up in safe mode. I'm running Windows 7.

When I try to run safe mode, it gets stuck at (see pic attached).

PC has been freezing up/ lagging quite frequently lately and I suspect that my RAM stick is the problem. My HDD is brand new btw. I've ran into 'required data not placed into memory error' before. Can bad memory stick cause PC not be able to start up? Hope someone can help me out.

Thank you.

Doesn't mean its not defective.

You need MemTest86+ to test your RAM,

and the manufacturer of your HDD will have tools to test your drive with.

Test both, report back

Try switching RAM slots or just running one stick

I only have one stick. I did switch slots before.

It's progressing now. Already have 3 passes. I've read that running the test for 24 hours is recommended. I guess I should probably do that.

I had similar error message over a year ago and turn out my main SSD is giving up.

no definite answer.

Yeah Memtest can take a long time to run, on systems where I strongly suspect bad ram, I would let it run for days.

But let's assume for the time being your RAM is good. Next is the HDD or SSD...which one do you have?

1 TB WD. This is my third HDD because previous 2 HDDs were bad from an online retailer. I bought this one from a different shop couple months ago.

Whenever I leave tabs open on my Chrome, it freezes the whole PC for few seconds to load up again when I return to those tabs. Even some programs like Spotify and discord. Idk if this would help to identify the problem but just putting it out there.

Is this on the same motherboard?

That might be an important clue...

Yes. Same motherboard. My GPU stopped working as well last year. The fan still runs and all but it's not detected and there was no display. I never thought about mobo being the problem but now it seems like it.

At this point, it's probably time for a whole new system....

but all the same, test the hard drive (WDDiags I think is the name of the software) just to ensure it's not going bad too.

Well shit. I'll keep running the Memtest86 for another 12 hours or so and see how it goes. I was thinking about buying new memory stick first and try it out but now I'm not so sure anymore. I'll update later. Thank you.
