Upgrading ram sticks

I currently use 2x4gb ddr3 ram for my computer and it is struggling with lots of task opens so I want to upgrade. I was thinking to buy a 8gb stick so it would be 1x4gb and 1x8gb, both ddr3 ram ofc. Would this work?

With only that information to go by, it could. Mixing unlike sticks isn't a good idea, though, and you'd be cutting your memory bandwidth in half by using single channel, assuming it even boots.

I was thinking about to buy the same brand and the same clock speed so everything would be the same except the gb's.

Running different sized sticks can cause issues sometimes, really depends on the hardware. You'd be better off waiting, saving up a bit more and getting a 2x8GB kit if you're going to upgrade.
