Is it 'okay' for oneself to CONSTANTLY have the power cord plugged into the laptop? (Sort of like always powering a desktop)

Depends on the laptop, but for the most part yes

Charging a laptop constantly will very slowly overload the batter cells. Even just charging to 100% does this, and lithium ion batteries don't like it very much. When I can, I keep my battery between 85 and 25 because nothing drains too much and nothing fills too much.

 

It won't have an explosive result, just eventually degrade the battery.

I have an HP Compaq CQ56 (From 2010) - it has been plugged in almost constantly since 2010, only used unplugged a handful of times a year.  

 

It still has a 1.5 hour battery life, as tested about a week ago during a power outage.

 

So, while it can technically be bad for the battery, it can take a LONG time to manifest.

 

Do whatever is easiest for you, the worst case is you would need a new battery after a year or three.
