If it's in the budget you should throw an SSD in there for a boot drive. SSD's are pretty cheap now.

Yea I tried doing that earlier with a beefier 1060 but it was over his 1k budget. After finding the zotac Im sure I could get a 240 gb ssd Easy. I was concerned with a bottle neck on the 1060 with the 8700k any thoughts? hes newer to pc building so he might never OC

The 1060 6GB and 8700k are a good match.

That's the same CPU I have, except I run a 1080. Do you have it overclocked at all?

I do, Ive kept it at base since Ive gotten it, the motherboard my pc came has its BIOS locked to prevent overclocking. but I have an AIO On it and it runs fairly cool

Bummer, it OCs amazingly. I've got mine up to 4.6GHz stable, and it could probably go farther if I really wanted to put the time in to mess with it.

Good luck with your friend's build!

I personally don't think an 8700K is a good match with the 1060; you could pretty close to getting a 1070 with a 9600K, which is basically a 8700K without hyperthreading. You could also instead keep the 1060/9600K and invest in storage/PSU bumps.

Laptop | 2018 MBA 256/16GB | MX Master
