Hello, so I decided to OC my cpu. I never dreamed of oc'ing it but i do plan on upgrading soon to Ryzen. I don't think its fair for my GPU (1070) to be carrying my cpu through games etc etc. (If my cpu is even impacting it).

I tried first for 4.8ghz, but it required too much voltage and that produced too much heat. (I'm only running a 212 evo air cool). I then decided to not do anything but i noticed my CPU wasn't doing any turbo boosting or going to 4.2ghz during a normal test on prime95. So I decided to overclock it too 4.2ghz. So far while typing this and running prime95 torture test i'm sitting at all 4.2ghz on cores, 100% usage, and sitting at max 55c but now hanging around 5.3c.

Running it at 1.3 voltage. I plan on maybe going more down until its not stable to save more, but i think i am too lazy. My real target was 4.6 but if its max 55c at just 4.2. I don't think ill be hitting 4.6ghz under 61c sadly.

However currently at 4.2ghz, is this good?

I'm running a 8350fx (black edition)

Gigabyte 990fxa ud3 rev 4?

not sure on the power supply, but when i purchased it, it was a popular EVGA gold+ 750 power supply.

Your motherboard should have a better self overclocking setting, like ASUS has Performance Mode that sets a mild overclock - on my FX it puts it to 4.3 without any adjustments to voltages etc.

Look up a guide for OCing that chip within your specific motherboards BIOS on YouTube, it should help with getting all the settings to something manageable.  I can get mine to 4.7ghz no problem but I need to upgrade cooling for my own tastes if I keep it there.

And btw...its bottlenecking the everliving F out of that GPU.  I just put an R9 Fury Nitro (10% slower than a 1070 in benches).  The FX doesn't have to get pegged out (it cant I don't think lol) and the card laughs in its face putting 100 FPS in spikes like its no problem.  Ill be upgrading that CPU and MOBO soon because its a bad bottleneck.  Functional?  Hell yeah Im not knocking it, but...

Thanks for the quick reply. I did look up some guides, and I never overclocked before. So I just copied what people had, like disabling this and that, and such. Didn't see them adjust a auto-overclock feature or self-overclocking setting. I tired doing 4.6ghz and 4.4ghz but they are all going beyond 61c in temps. Now, I can understand that most games wont use full 100% Cores, which even if it settles close or around 61c in prime95, but i just like to make sure it either sits or is kinda under 61c z-z.

Yes, I kinda figured its bottlenecking my gpu lol. I plan on getting the Ryzen 2700x or wait for the new ones.

Im an OC newb myself.  I can only respond with the 4.2 isn't a good OC for that chip :) (albeit one of my most favorite CPUs Ive had, and I am sitting next to my R7 1700 machine...I never game on it I let the wife have it lol).  Id say keep messing with it but eventually you will have to replace that air cooler to keep it cold.

I see, well i'm doing 4.4ghz right now. I didn't crash during Cinebench R15. Max temp it got was 50c and the score was 685. Will try doing prime95 rn.

Update to the 4.4ghz. I am sitting at 1.347? close to 1.35 voltage and so far it hasn't crashed in Prime95. However, the temps are a concern. Max so far is 59.9c. I don't know if I should keep 4.4ghz or go back to 4.2ghz.

What do you guys think? I'll be saving about, 6c by reverting. But during gaming will it ever be hitting the 60c?

Update 2** Welp, one of the cores crashed. So I reverted back to 4.2ghz. Ran it for an hour and everything was fine at max temp : 52c and voltage 1.3. I'll just leave it as is.
