Fan header confusion

Got my first build put together recently, and my exhaust fan is running at half the speed of the front fan, according to HWMonitor. They're just the basic three-pin fans that came with my Rosewill Tyrfing case. In my Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H motherboard manual, it states that SYS_FAN1 has +12V/Speed Control on pin 2, while SYS_FAN2/3 have it on pin 4. The exhaust fan is plugged in to SYS_FAN1, and the front fan to SYS_FAN2.

Why is SYS_FAN1 different? What type of fan is it meant for? I'll probably move my exhaust fan to SYS_FAN3, but am curious to know the purpose of SYS_FAN1 having different pins.

All fans have speed control, some from PWM others from DC, look for it in the Bios section

CPU_FAN support speed control on both 4pin PWM and 3pin fans, SYS_FAN1 also support fan speed control on both types of fans (but never in PWM mode), SYS_FAN2 and 3 only support fan speed control on 4pin PWM fans

Ok, that makes sense. So my exhaust fan is utilizing speed control, but the other is just running wide open. Is the speed automatically controlled based on temperature? Or is it just manually set in the BIOS? I'll have to check and see...

it can be set in the BIOS, but if you havent touched it then it's usually controlled based on CPU temperature.
