Hey all, if this has been answered before let me know and ill go read that thread.

I have an old Lenovo desktop that i have restored and partially upgraded with some aftermarket components (EVGA 500 Bronze PSU and GTX 1060 for starters) that i want to keep around for longer

It has a i3-3220 in it, and i wanted to know if i can just get a i7-3770 or 3770K off of Ebay and swap them out without issue?

Is there anything beyond just a clean thermal paste job i need to do?

  • New Heatsink?
  • Bios tweak?
  • W10 issues to get around?

Ill post photos of it later if you can stand the bad cable jobs inside. but yeah any ideas from the crowd?

as far as i know, it should work just fine but its best to google something like "*insert motherboard model here* cpu compatibility" or something and having a new heatsink to go with that would be good but im not sure if any heatsinks will do cuz some oems have proprietary connectors (correct me if im wrong) for fans.

We'd have to know more to be able to really help you. Can the motherbaord provide the power for an i7? Does the BIOS support those CPUs? Has Dell outright locked out CPUs outside their OEM lists of CPUs?

But in general, a 3770(K) does need more cooling than the i3. 125W TDP worth IIRC. If it's supported, you only have to enter the BIOS and save the settings. You'll know it's not supported from you not being able to enter BIOS to begin with. And Win10 will be just fine. Within the same CPU architecture, it doesn't care and automatically scales up to the newly available cores and threads.

edit: boy, was I off! 3770K is 77W TDP, 3220 is 55W TDP. Still, ramping up the cooling will not hurt.

Lol yeah I wish the 3770t were cheaper or I'd slide that lower tdp i7 in.

I'll get the board make and post them later. See what we got. Cpuz 3ill pull that right?
