So I had an i7-6850k and it had crapped out on me after about two years. I had it replaced for free, because of warranty, only to have this one crap out on me as well after just over two months. I am wanting to get a brand new processor instead of getting another obviously used piece of crap replacement.

I have four eight Gb RAM sticks, two GTX 1080, a Corsair HX1000i PSU, and an ASUS x99-e ws/usb 3.1 motherboard. I am wanting to get an i9-9900k CPU, but the lack of PCI-E lanes and RAM slots for a full hardware transfer and the need for a new motherboard is putting me off. I can't find anything else at first glance that will support 2*x16 PCI-E lanes and more RAM slots.

I wonder if taking two GPU's and running them in x8 would be better or worse than a single x16. Furthermore, I am confused about the fact that in a video or two somewhere in LTT when Linus had used more than 2 RAM slots for his i9-9900k.

Running two 1080's in sli on mainstream chipsets works just fine, you won't see any difference. unless you have other pcie components you need then you're fine. As for using more than 2 sticks of ram it's fine, 2 sticks is better for overclocking, but if you aren't determined to run your hardware at the bleeding edge you can fill all the ram slots and it won't matter much

Ok. Would I also need one of the HB SLI connectors because of the more limited PCI-E bandwidth on x8 vs x16? I have seen some videos about GPU SLI bandwidth options and performance. Some said running the HB SLI would yield slightly more results anywhere from about 1-20% increase; some said that running two traditional flexible SLI bridges would basically do the same as the HB bridge.

I couldn't come to any clear conclusion in my research.

Also, would my two GPU's cause the CPU to fail? I have had this issue for a while and I have no idea what is causing it.
