I am going to build my first computer! (Yay!) I feel confident in my ability (because of watching Linus, of course!), I'm just curious if it would be possible to overclock the 9900k with the Asus ROG Strix B360-i, or would I need a Z370/Z390? it's not a deal breaker, but am just curious. Just trying to get the best performance out of the lowest cost possible.

Current parts list:

Thermaltake Core V1 Mini-ITX Case

Intel Core i9 9900k

Asus ROG Strix B360-I

Corsair H55 AIO Liquid Cooler

Pioneer M.2 256GB SSD

Patriot Viper Elite DDR4 8GB (*Will add a second stick later)

Thermaltake Smart 700W 80+ White PSU

*Adding later* Asus/Zotac RTX 2070 Blower Edition

*I also already own brand new case fans, 1x 80mm and 1x 120mm

I don't believe I'm missing anything, I have a Windows 10 USB installer that I created, and will activate later through the Windows Store.

Please don't judge my choice of components, that's not what this thread was for.

I just want to triple make sure I have all the parts I need and am wondering about the overclock-ability of the 9900k and b360-i combo.

Yeah, if hes not OCing or minor OCing hes fine, but not if he wants to join the 5Ghz club or any where close.

I put in bold and strike through the issues I already see with this build....

CPU: i7 9700k...Why? It's about 200$ cheaper and will let you put that money somewhere else were it's more important.
Motherboard: Asrock Taichi Ultimate....Why? It's a very solid board for overclocking and priced well for what you get.
Cooler: Enermax ELC-LMR240-BS...Why? It's a very well built 240mm cooler for the price and will offer some better temps.
Ram: G.Skill or Corsair 3000-3200MHz DDR4 2x8GB kit....Why? They tend to be the best price per gb for a flashy kit.

But to answer your original question correctly, no you will not be able to overclock a 9900k on a b360 motherboard.

A few things, get a z390 gigabyte motherboard instead.

the h55 isn't enough for a 9900k,

Make sure the ram is at least 2666 (i'd go 3000+),

2060 instead of 2070 if you need to save money, you also don't need a 9900k for a 2060 or 2070, unless you plan to upgrade video card but not the cpu somewhere down the line.

Thanks for all your input!

Thanks for the clarification on OCing, I'll have to upgrade the mobo to a Z390 later down the road if I need it.

I don't have much of a choice for this build, because I am dead set on a compact Mini-ITX build (Thermaltake Core V1 ), which limits the motherboard options and the cpu cooler size. Looks like I could fit up to a dual fan 140mm AIO. What might you recommend? Would this be decent? (CoolerMaster Dual 120mm ) or is that Enermax ELC-LMR240-BS better?

I went with the 9900k over the 9700k because of hyperthreading. I need as much performance as possible out of the CPU for heavier-loaded video editing. The more cores/threads, the better. The only other CPU I would want to put in would be the 8086k if I wanted/needed to go a bit cheaper.

And I picked the 2070 over the 2060 because,

A) It's likely not going in the build right away, so I have time to save up some extra money, and

B) It has more vRAM than the 2060 for rendering frames faster, and the Ray-Tracing for better rendering out the 3D effects.

So, unless the ray tracing is a joke for video editing, in which case I'd go with a
