Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new keyboard since my K200 has been m y daily driver since a few years ago. I think its time to let it go. I've done some research and have come to the conclusion that mechanical keyboards are the superior choice for keyboards... so we got that out of the way, so lets continue. i need a keyboard with a backlight. i prefer blue or red but that does not matter much. Just need a backlight. I also don't need and also preferably don't want usb passthroughs. USB hub via the same cable is alright, but no super thick cable or anything like that. Wristrest is good but I can get my own, so no need to worry in that department. I think that that should be it. I live in Singapore... so I don't want to confuse people form other parts of the world about the pricing.. so lets not meddle in that for now. So... i think thats pretty much it. So please help me choose a good mechanical keyboard and thanks in advance!

The corsair k70 is a very nice keyboard for both typing and gaming (i have the red switched model) and the wrist wrest that comes with it is soft touch thin rubber than will provide comfort for hours. Red or Blue LED choice.

^ this. I have the mx blue version and love it. The switch is up to you. The red back lighting on black body is only on the mx red switch, if you want mx blues or mx browns you will have to get silver with blue lighting.

CM Storm Quickfire TK if you don't want to throw too much money at it. Ducky Shine 3 if you can throw more money at it for extra fancy lighting features. K70 if you want something that looks awesome physically.

Although, I think it would help to narrow down what you really want. Which size? Full-size, ten-keyless, 60%, macro keys? Any preference what kind of switches? Cherry? Clicky (brown)? Clicky and clacky (blue)? No clickity (red)?

Reviews have been pretty good on the blackbird.  My dad's should arrive on Monday and I'll post his/our thoughts.   This will be my dad's first mechanical keyboard.  He will only be typing with it (no gaming).

I'm pretty excited for it to arrive.

The only down side (cons) that may affect my Dad would be...

  - no rubber pads under the back flip-legs

... but "liquid electrical tape" would solve that.  Just brush a little on the feet and let it dry.

As said by many already, the K70 from Corsair is a great choice, and I would suggest one with Cherry MX Brown switches for your first mechanical keyboard.

Why is that so?

Why is that so?

Because the Browns have all of the great merits that you would get with any mechanical switch: Low actuation point, incredible lifespan, better, more accurate typing, but without the extremes that you have to get used to with say, a Blue or a Red based keyboard: The Blues with the over-accentuated actuation feedback and audible "click", and the Reds with their incredibly light; and sometimes too easy to hit keys and smooth key travel. The Browns are easier to get used to; close enough to membrane to make them easy to type with at first, but also far away enough to make them so, so much better. But, when it comes down to it, it is your preference, so try some out if you can, read up, and make your own decision.
